Bhopkins's insight:
The parcel described is protected by NeighborSpace with a conservation easement. But the underlying fee is owned by Tollgate Wyndham Preserve, a nonprofit formed by Dr. Filner and others, including Dave Fuller, who had a vision for preserving the property and creating the walking trails that exist today for the benefit of the local community.

Measuring What Works for Healthy Green Spaces— Washington, D.C.-Baltimore, Md.: The Mechanisms and Design Elements of Restorative Experiences
Bhopkins's insight:

"Measuring What Works for Healthy Green Spaces will study the effects of nature on cognitive functioning without constructing or even visiting a natural space. Instead, study participants will be shown images of different design elements from many of the TKF Foundation’s regional, Mid-Atlantic Open Spaces Sacred Places. The impact of these design elements will then be measured through a combination of fMRI brain imaging, cortisol assays and journal analysis.

Beyond determining the elements of nature that have a positive impact on cognitive functioning, the project has farther-reaching implications. “We’re going to try to use these results to inform the future design of natural spaces in urban areas,”

City issues are environmental issues. Here's why. | Kaid Benfield's Blog | Switchboard, from NRDC | Suburban Land Trusts | Scoop.it
Cities need nature, as I wrote in an earlier essay.  But what is not so well understood is that nature also needs cities.  There is simply no way we can protect and maintain a beautiful, thriving, natural and rural...
Bhopkins's insight:

"we also need well-planned suburbs to succeed, but in a less sprawling, more walkable form than we have typically built in recent decades."

Baltimore County Md. News - Merritt Pavilion Announces Progress for Dundalk Project | Suburban Land Trusts | Scoop.it
The developer of the proposed Merritt Pavilion is close to securing commitments from three well-known national restaurant chains to bring their restaurants to Dundalk.
Bhopkins's insight:

"In listening to the community, it was clear to me that even though a 21,000 square feet center would be among the largest in the County, we needed the facility to be even larger to accommodate all of the programs that will use the facility. I am very pleased to announce that Dundalk's new community center will be 24,395 square feet, the second largest amount of recreational space in a community center in the County..."

Americans Love Local Government—They Just Don't Necessarily Want More of It

Americans Love Local Government—They Just Don't Necessarily Want More of It | Suburban Land Trusts | Scoop.it
Survey respondents who reported the highest satisfaction with local government services weren't inclined to support spending more on it—especially among whites.
Bhopkins's insight:

"...whether men or women, whether white, black, or Hispanic, in every region and locality, of any age or income group, respondents said that the government services they received were a decent value for the local taxes they paid. A majority of every single group stated so. And for most constituencies, upward of 70 percent of respondents said that government works just fine for them where they live."

It's Crucial Not to Forget That Nearly Everyone Still Drives to Work

It's Crucial Not to Forget That Nearly Everyone Still Drives to Work | Suburban Land Trusts | Scoop.it
In every urban demographic group in our State of City poll, the majority commuted by car.
Bhopkins's insight:

"If these commuter statistics share an underlying message, it's that the obstacles to balanced transportation networks are truly enormous, in both cities and suburbs alike. There is a long, long history here of great personal investment in a lifestyle whose basic purpose, in most cases, was just to provide a more tolerable existence for a working American family. The daily choice of commuting by car every morning is no longer really a choice at all for most people, but rather the lingering habitual aftermath of a decision made long ago."

Yet Another Reason to Like Green Neighborhoods: They're Associated With Healthier Births | Suburban Land Trusts | Scoop.it
Over the course of 3 years, pregnant women living in Vancouver’s greenest neighborhoods delivered healthier babies than those in less tree-lined communities.
Bhopkins's insight:

Interestingly, these health benefits remained even when controlled variables like air pollution and distance from the nearest park were altered."

What is the meaning and role of the “sacred” in the design and management of urban green space and the building of cities that are both green and livable? | The Nature of Cities | Suburban Land Trusts | Scoop.it
Bhopkins's insight:

"If we want to conserve the landscapes that save us and give us gifts, then we should always call them what they are: sacred, open places that nuture the spirit.  Intervention in a territory should be seen as a ritual in which man can only play a small role, and tries to pass unnoticed."
