Elon Musk Is Returning to Boston to Keynote a Space Conference - BostInno

Elon Musk Is Returning to Boston to Keynote a Space Conference - BostInno | Perspectives on suborbital tourism industry | Scoop.it

The last time Elon Musk spoke in the Boston area, in October, he offered up a quote that has been repeated frequently in the months since then—saying that artificial intelligence is likely "our biggest existential threat" and comparing it to "summoning the demon."

He also had some other interesting comments during the talk at MIT, including about the possibility of space travel—something he and his company SpaceX are working toward, and that he thinks might be essential to the furtherance of the human race...

Everything old is new again | The Space Review

Everything old is new again | The Space Review | Perspectives on suborbital tourism industry | Scoop.it

The flight of Orion looked, to some, like a throwback to the capsules of the 1960s. Andre Bormanis says that the rationales for human space exploration, by contrast, can’t look back to the past but instead embrace the capabilities of today and tomorrow.

Vincent Lieser's curator insight, December 26, 2014 12:54 PM

Andre Bormanis applauds the achievements of the team that sent Orion into space last Friday. It thrilled him to see a vehicle capable of taking humans beyond LEO for the first time in over forty years pass its first real test so spectacularly. And certainly it’s a promising step in the direction of getting astronauts to the vicinity of Mars and back home. But if the Orion capsule is ever going to be put to its intended use, the President, Congress, and NASA needs to seriously re-think the role of humans in space, taking into account the ever-advancing capabilities in robotics and telepresence that will be available in the 2030s, probably the earliest timeframe in which a human mission to Mars might be undertaken. A program based on fifty-year-old mission plans and romantic nostalgia has little if any chance of being realized. The strategies of the past will not help us achieve the goals of the future.

If must can land a Falcon 9 core on his drone ship, and then refurbish and reuse it, it is game over. Nobody will be able to compete with the economics of what will essentially be a fully reusable first stage.

Commercial spaceflight setbacks and why we still need to go to space

Commercial spaceflight setbacks and why we still need to go to space | Perspectives on suborbital tourism industry | Scoop.it

"Whether or not the Oct. 31 crash was preventable, it was far from pointless. It is worth considering that to a striking degree, the criticism of 'space tourism' today echoes the scoffing of a century ago that greeted the arrival of powered flight.

"Certainly the Wright brothers and others like them were involved in what we now view as an epic quest, but many experts of the day were certain that flight, however interesting, was destined to be not much more than a rich man’s hobby with no practical value."
