TechCrunch | Wikipedia’s Next Big Thing: Wikidata, A Machine-Readable, User-Editable Database Funded By Google, Paul Allen And Others | Stuff that Tweaks | Scoop.it

The project’s goal in developing a semantic, machine-readable database doesn’t just help push the web forward, it also helps Wikipedia itself. The data will bring all the localized versions of Wikipedia on par with each other in terms of the basic facts they house. Today, the English, German, French and Dutch versions offer the most coverage, with other languages falling much further behind.

This Creepy App Isn’t Just Stalking Women Without Their Knowledge, It’s A Wake-Up Call About Facebook Privacy [Update] | Cult of Mac | Stuff that Tweaks | Scoop.it

Captured: America in Color from 1939-1943 – Plog Photo Blog | Stuff that Tweaks | Scoop.it

"These images, by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information, are some of the only color photographs taken of the effects of the Depression on America’s rural and small town populations. The photographs are the property of the Library of Congress and were included in a 2006 exhibit Bound for Glory: America in Color."

Asil Note: It's amazing how color pulls these images into such sharp relief, making them more immediate and yet so clearly images of the (now) distant past.

Finding a 42-foot-long snake (fossil) - Boing Boing | Stuff that Tweaks | Scoop.it

This giant serpent looked something like a modern-day boa constrictor, but behaved more like today’s water-dwelling anaconda. Scientists call it Titanoboa cerrejonensis.

Privacy is a Sci-Fi Fantasy - PCWorld | Stuff that Tweaks | Scoop.it

What is it about digital information that's convinced some people this is OK? Maybe the right to privacy we were told so much about has simply become old-fashioned, a barrier to progress. But as with any good weapons, there's some other secrets that will remain secret!"
