"(...) Teachers are wrong to assume that their role is to only convey information, and that merely saying the magic words will translate into learning for students, Lahey said. “Our students can access lots of information really efficiently now online, probably more efficiently than we could ever relay it,” he said. “So the added value of interactions with faculty should be talking through difficult concepts, refining difficult decision-making, and otherwise doing the challenging stuff that can’t be done with a laptop or phone. I try to structure lectures with that in mind. (...)”

Mini Home Lab for Selflearning. | Stuff abt education | Scoop.it

A Low cost improvised science teaching and learning kit to learn nearly 30 basic concepts in high scool physics and chemistry by the students themselves.I designed this for the benefit rural schools with the help of my students where I worked. My student R.L. Roja of Z.P.High school,Kodali  exhibited the kit in various  Science Exhibitions,District,State,Southern India and National Levels.

Here two models from our Mini Lab are shown.1) conversion electricity into other forms of energy(Law of conservation of Energy).

2) Preparation and collection of some gases like O2 and H2 in classroom or at home for first hand knowledge in a simple way without any fear of  cost and breakage.

This improvised low cost apparatus made of mostly disposed material is very effective in teaching the working priciple of a Rheostat when connected in a circuit. How the flow of electricity in a circuit changes with change in resistance is very conveniently explained while teaching the concept.

Flat nichrome wire from an old electric iron is wound spirally on an empty felt tip pen barrel leaving gaps between the windings with equal spacing. The length of the wire increases or decreases as we move up and down the barrel.A gem clip is used as a slider to go up and down the wire wound barrel.A 6v bulb is connected in the circuit along with a 9v dry cell.As the gem clip is slided up and the barrel one can observe the change in the intensity in the brightness of the bulb.
