Ben Keefer's insight:

This might just be the dork in me talking but I think this is also pretty damn cool. Recreating medieval armor using fabric and cloth? Shows an understanding of fabric as a material and it's limitations, uses the common design of a hoodie to create a parallel between knight's helments. Like, simple straight-forward ideas executed well makes for good design right? I'm not crazy. The state of modern fashion has so much explaining to do.

Ben Keefer's insight:

Effectively unrelated to my inquiries and explorations but at least it's comforting to know that fashion can be used to make me laugh successfully. Way to go Rihanna, keep on keepin' on.

Bazaar accessory editors' select their favorite shoes, bags and jewelry during Fashion Week.
Ben Keefer's insight:

I feel like this is another aspect of fashion I don't understand: fragmentation. All of my design studies feature prominently the notion of completeness, wholeness, a sense of unity with the overall scheme. So how does revering or admirring accessories independent of the overall outfit composition even work? You surely couldn't carry or use these with every outfit and I'd hope that the people showing these items off have outfits that suit them. So unless they're arguing that these independent elements are the most interesting/only interesting thing about the compositions they came from, I find this all very perplexing from a design perspective. Someone, please help me make sense of this.

Ben Keefer's insight:

While hardly as revolutionary or ground-breaking as I hoped it'd be, knowing both Tumblr and the internet's typical connotation surrounding the word "alternative", but at least there are some vaguely interesting things going on here. A good pool of examples of modern clothing design that even I can understand why people would wear and appreciate.

Statement-making prints from Givenchy, Burberry, and Alexander McQueen, among others—as seen in the Details Network.
Ben Keefer's insight:

What amounts to a T-shirt with a painting printed onto it with seemingly little to no regard as to how that image will appear when twisted, turned, or wrinkled (the nature state of most clothes as they are on people's bodies) costs $700. My attempt to dive headfirst into fashion trends of the modern world has only left me confused and frustrated.

Laetitia Casta Wearing Christian Dior Couture - 'Zulu' 2013 Cannes Film Festival Premiere And Closing Ceremony
Ben Keefer's insight:

This is the only example of interesting high fashion I can recall. The usage of materials, the colors, the understanding of how the material hangs and compliments the rest of the outfit; this design is actually stunning and beautiful in a very real way, in a way I'd imagine anyone could appreciate. Is there more of this anywhere? I could get behind this 100%. Astonishing stuff.

Michael Kors - - Fashion Week Spring 2014 - Fashion - InStyle.com | Stuff About Things: A Exploration Into The Miscellaneous | Scoop.it
Ben Keefer's insight:

Right, so over on the right-hand side of this web page is an advertisement for Armani featuring two women wearing an outfit composed of what I perceive to be two disseperate elements: a grey suit jacket and simple black hat juxtaposed with a more flowery, ornate dress. This contrast works surprisingly well thanks in part to a successful balancing of colors and an understanding of form and shape in clothing. Compare this to the feature of this site, a gallery of bored looking women wearing clothes you've seen a million times before except maybe on different people and with different colors. Once again, what on Earth is going on with modern/trending fashion? Why and how does it appear to be doing so little with it's medium, even on a basic fundamental level of design?

Freaky Fashion: Some of the year's more bizarre designs

Freaky Fashion: Some of the year's more bizarre designs | Stuff About Things: A Exploration Into The Miscellaneous | Scoop.it
Designers embraced irreverence and performance art as well passion and color in 2012. In that spirit we take a look at some of the more unusual designs showcased at fashion shows during the past year.
Ben Keefer's insight:

Aaaaand HERE's a good list of the kinds of outfits that give runway fashion it's infamous reputation. I would really, really like to know the motivations behind these designs. It's not as if nothing interesting is being explored, but it all feels so over-the-top and unfocused. Are these attempts at making something beautiful/engaging or is their another goal? This at least gives me some hope that modern fashion isn't quite so shallow as some sites have been making it seem.

Now Trending: Bright Red | Stuff About Things: A Exploration Into The Miscellaneous | Scoop.it
There's been a lot of red on the runway lately, but this is not the salmon or maroon you've been seeing a lot of recently. Check out the bright, bold jackets, sweaters, watches, and shoes that our contributing style writers have spotlighted.
Ben Keefer's insight:

This is what counts as trending? A new, slightly different shade of red? Either runway fashion is unbelievably immature and underdeveloped as an art form or Detail.com is severely misleading me. I will look elsewhere.
