The growing field of educational technology, or ed tech, is much more than putting tablets into classrooms. It’s changing the very way that students learn and teachers teach and it’s the hot investment of the moment. Venture capital in the industry is spiking and even the big players are launching their own incubators trying to get in on the action. We take you inside Socratic Labs, an ed-tech accelerator in New York City for a lesson in what makes this industry so hot.

5 MOOCs Teachers Should Take As Students

5 MOOCs Teachers Should Take As Students | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

MOOCs may or may not save higher education, and if they save it they may further widen the gap between elite and lesser-known schools. They may also reinforce existing achievement gaps for students. As massive open online courses continue to evolve, however, educators need to know what they are and how they are changing the education landscape.

In fact, teachers and professors could be well served by trying out MOOCs for themselves. After all, the classes are free and full of information. Providers such as Coursera, edX and Udacity offer catalogs of subject- and skills-organized options for new MOOC-takers. For anyone working in education, though, the best first stop might be “Education” category at Coursera.

Linda Alexander's curator insight, March 28, 2013 12:31 PM

This is a great starter list, although I just signed up for Case Western Reserve University's first entry into Coursera with a professor rated as one of the top human resources experts in the world.  The class is called "Inspiring Leadership Through Emotional Intelligence".  I understand there are already 50,000 people enrolled. (As we know, however, the drop-out rate for these classes is quite high).  I would think this type of class would make the top of the list for any teacher or school administrator.  Overall, it is best to get the link to Coursera and other MOOCAs and browse all the offerings yourself.  There are plenty of courses and life long learning opportunities.

5 Alternatives to Unfriending Someone on Facebook

5 Alternatives to Unfriending Someone on Facebook | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

People are annoying on Facebook — that's no secret. Between uninformed political rants and unnecessary gaming updates, we've all been tempted to do some major unfriending for a better social experience.

But Facebook unfriending can be awkward or taken personally, often making it more trouble than it's worth.

That's why we've come up with five alternatives to deleting a friend completely: changing visibility settings, tailoring updates based on interests and other ways to preserve both your friendship and your sanity.

Beth Dichter's curator insight, March 22, 2013 8:06 PM

Gerstein provides an interesting look at where education is and where education is going. She provides a look at research that shows that schools are "living within and functioning through an Education 1.0 model." She quotes an article that states "Essentialists argue that classrooms should be teacher-oriented. The teachers or administrators decide what is most important for the students to learn with little regard to the student interests. The teachers also focus on achievement test scores as a means of evaluating progress."

So what defines Education 2.0? "Education 2.0 includes more interaction between the teacher and student; student to student; and student to content/expert."

Education 3.0 moves us into a new direction, one that we are beginning to see. Content is free (think open educational resources) and readily available, It is more self-directed with a focus on creativity, problem solving and innovation.

As always there is a wealth of resources available in the post.

Betsy Eubanks's curator insight, March 23, 2013 7:39 AM

Excellent content, although evaluative testing issue remains unaddressed.

ICTs and Literacy (the old fashioned kind)

ICTs and Literacy (the old fashioned kind) | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

The Library of Congress recently announced a set of literacy awards to recognize and honor pioneering efforts in the United States and around the world. That's all well and good, you might say, literacy is certainly a worthy cause, but what does this have to do with ICT use in education in developing countries, the topic explored on the EduTech blog? Potentially a lot.
