Learning Without Frontiers Summit Cancelled | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

It is with sincere regret that we must inform our community that the Learning Without Frontiers Summit in London will not now take place this June.

You don’t need us to remind you of the current challenges facing the economy in general, and education in particular. But sadly, due to this unusually difficult economic environment we have been unable to secure sufficient commercial sponsorship support for LWF London early enough to be certain that we could run a superb event to the exacting standard we expect. We have spent eight years gaining the trust of this community and, in simple terms, we do it right, or not at all.

This technology is powerful because it gives them insights into the future. It makes them dream about the ways technology can change the world. Most of all, it inspires them to imagine themselves as part of the force that brings changes. Robots are increasingly being used in classrooms all over the world. The biggest advantage this technology offers is real-time feedback to all students in the class. Students enjoy learning with robots, so inspiring them to accept this new way of learning is not a big issue. Encouraging the teachers and schools to introduce robots in the classroom… that’s our problem.

The CEO of Enlearn argues that a digital curriculum that adjusts in real-time to the needs of individual students and teachers is the future of education.

 

"Recently, our partners at the Center for Game Science at the University of Washington found through their algebra challenges that nearly 95 percent of students participating were able to reach concept mastery of linear equations using the generative adaptive version of the content. But some students needed as much as six times the practice to reach those mastery levels. Furthermore, the additional practice material that any two students required was different—it was specific to each student’s unique learning pathway and progression. This means providing six times the content, tailored specifically to the moment-by-moment learning challenges of each student. A fixed text is incapable of generating any new content, let alone six times the content.

Teaching students good learning strategies would ensure that they know how to acquire new knowledge, which leads to improved learning outcomes, writes lead author Helen Askell-Williams of Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia. And studies bear this out. Askell-Williams cites as one example a recent finding by PISA, the Programme for International Student Assessment, which administers academic proficiency tests to students around the globe, and place American students in the mediocre middle. “Students who use appropriate strategies to understand and remember what they read, such as underlining important parts of the texts or discussing what they read with other people, perform at least 73 points higher in the PISA assessment—that is, one full proficiency level or nearly two full school years—than students who use these strategies the least,” the PISA report reads.

From Turkey to Thailand, some countries punch above their weight when it comes to university access and research. And where education takes root, economic growth soon follows, says Chris Parr of Times Higher Education.
From a higher education point of view, Thailand, Argentina, Chile, Turkey, Iran, Colombia and Serbia have the potential to outstrip the BRICS nations of Brazil, Russia India, China and South Africa – the countries traditionally identified as global rising stars. In all these countries, GDP is below US$15,000 a head, yet at least half the youth population is enrolled in higher education. Participation grew by 5% or more between 2010 and 2014; their research output is growing from a base of at least 30,000 papers a year; and they have at least one university in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Schools nowadays are required to learn faster than ever before in order to deal effectively with the growing pressures of a rapidly changing environment. Many schools however, look much the same today as they did a generation ago, and too many teachers are not developing the pedagogies and practices required to meet the diverse needs of 21st-century learners.

In response, a growing body of scholars, educators and policy makers around the world is making the case that schools should be re-conceptualised as “learning organisations” that can react more quickly to changing external environments, embrace innovations in internal organisation, and ultimately improve student outcomes. Despite strong support for and the intuitive appeal of the school as a learning organisation, relatively little progress has been made in advancing the concept, either in research or practice. This lack of progress partly stems from a lack of clarity or common understanding of the school as learning organisation.
