Carlos Fosca's curator insight, June 23, 5:22 PM

What is a PLN? Why do I need one?

What is a PLN? Why do I need one? | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
In the education world, PLN stands for Personal Learning Network. What it means is that an individual has developed their own personalized “network” of fellow educators and resources who are designed to make them a better teacher. This network exists both in their real-life relationships and online through their social media connections.

With more and more opportunities to develop one’s skills beyond what traditional routes have provided, establishing your own PLN is an essential step toward deepening your abilities as an educator. In the past, teachers were able to get connected to teaching resources through master’s courses, education journals, conferences, professional development, and other similar activities. Each of these were and still are excellent ways to broaden your knowledge and skills in education. However, because each of these requires your physical presence and procurement of physical materials, they also come with certain restrictions.

20 Ideas for Professional Development in the Digital Age

20 Ideas for Professional Development in the Digital Age | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
What is professional development?  It is pretty much anything that helps one develop professionally. At the heart, professional development is about growth and learning.  In the field of education, it seems like many quickly think of educational opportunities that mimic what they see in their schools. As a result, they turn professional learning and education into schooling.  The problem with that is that schooling is too limiting.  In this age, there are many other exciting and high-impact learning opportunities for teachers that extend beyond traditional notions of schooling.  When we hear the phrase “professional development,” certain practices likely come to mind, things like in-services and conferences. In the digital age, there are countless other opportunities for professional development and restricting one’s thoughts to just a few options limits our insight into what is possible for our students.  With that in mind, here is a brainstorm of 20 options available to educators today. This is far from an exhaustive list, but it is enough to start exploring the possibilities.  Feel free to suggest others in a comment to this post.

Gilles Le Page's curator insight, April 27, 3:20 AM

How To Teach Children That Failure Is The Secret To Success - NPR

How To Teach Children That Failure Is The Secret To Success - NPR | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
Is failure a positive opportunity to learn and grow, or is it a negative experience that hinders success? How parents answer that question has a big influence on how much children think they can improve their intelligence through hard work, a study says.

"Parents are a really critical force in child development when you think about how motivation and mindsets develop," says Kyla Haimovitz, a professor of psychology at Stanford University. She coauthored the study, published in Psychological Science with colleague Carol Dweck, who pioneered research on mindsets. "Parents have this powerful effect really early on and throughout childhood to send messages about what is failure, how to respond to it."

Although there's been a lot of research on how these forces play out, relatively little looks at what parents can do to motivate their kids in school, Haimovitz says. This study begins filling that gap.

TEACHER LEADERSHIP & DEEPER LEARNING FOR ALL STUDENTS

In this new paper commissioned by the Ford Foundation, Barnett Berry makes the case for how a system of teacher leadership and learning can fuel deeper learning for all students.

Here is what the paper tackles:

examines current reforms’ limitations and notes some promising emergent examples, (like Social Justice Humanitas Academy in LAUSD); summarizes 30 years of research about how teachers learn and lead (also drawing on stories of teachers CTQ has worked with since our founding in 1998); identifies three promising shifts that could be leveraged to create an effective system of teacher leadership and learning; and
describes next steps that stakeholders (including policymakers, USDOE, state education leaders, superintendents, and others) can take to advance teacher leadership toward a more equitable public education system.

The infographic below reveals 3 big changes we can leverage now to improve public education for all students.

The comment and question in the image are misleading. Systems are not people. They are made up of people. Teachers understand students are people who have faces, names, and stories. That is how we experience personalizing and realating with students.
