It's more complex that 'nerds vs. educators' but sometimes it does feel like the MOOC revolution is driven by the hardware & software with little regard for the hard won and deeply researched lessons learned since the days when online learning was considered the Devil's stepchild.

 

Bate knows online learning as well as anyone on the planet. With the entrepreneur-tech-ed pundits listen?  Obviously not. 8-(

If you haven’t tried a free MOOC, I’d do it sooner than later. In recent weeks, the whole MOOC project took a hit when a University of Pennsylvania study found what was becoming empirically obvious — that MOOCs generally have very low participation and completion rates, and what’s more, most of the students taking the courses are “disproportionately educated, male, [and] wealthy,” and from the United States. This study, combined with other disappointing experiments and findings, will likely make universities think twice about sinking money into creating MOOCs (they can cost anywhere from $15,000 to $50,000 to develop). It might take another 6-12 months to see the shift. But I’d hazard a guess that this January might be the peak of the free MOOC trend. Enjoy them while they last. Whatever their shortcomings, they can be quite informative, and you can’t beat the price.

The insights revealed through the previous studies serves to codify what many educators, and even more marketers knew intuitively; free always begs the question of quality. Don't hear what I'm not saying. I'm not saying ALL MOOCs are low quality, I'm merely saying that without academic rigor and effective management, even the best intentions can slide off the rails.

 

I too had noted a number of previous MOOC supporters distancing themselves from the initiatives. Was there ever an identified demand for MOOCs, or were they simply a result of benevolent thinking? Regardless, it is interesting that the 'target audience' for MOOCs are apparently the ones taking least advantage of them. Perhaps the age old marketing rendition of supply and demand has merit still has merit.

When Technoduet first published its list of MOOC Providers about six months back, there were just 26 names.  Now it has 40 and growing.

 

Not only number of MOOC providers has multiplied, MOOC themselves have diversified.  We now have SPOC, MOOR  and even a MOOC based on a popular TV series.  The maturity, diversification and popularity of MOOC are all going up.

The speed of learning evolution continues to accelerate as MOOCs (massively open on-line courses) spawn SPOCs (small, private on-line courses) and MOORs (massively open on-line research). Add in social learning, tin can, AICC, and SCORM, we see us quickly moving to just-in-time learning to support the idea of the right talent at the right time with the right skills.

 

I think we are clearly entering the age of learning as a competitive advantage (for us as individuals and our organizations). in an age of rapid ans accelerating change and complexity, the winners will be those who can keep their L>C, their rate of learning must be greater than the rate of change and greater than their competition.

Thus far little attention has been paid to the quality of MOOCs. Quality in online learning can be defined in many ways: quality of content, quality of design, quality of instructional delivery, and, ultimately, quality of outcomes. On the face of it, the organizing principles of MOOCs are at odds with widely observed best practices in online education, including those advocated by my organization, the Quality Matters Program. Many of the first MOOCs are providing quality of content, but are far behind the curve in providing quality of design, accountable instructional delivery, or sufficient resources to help the vast majority of students achieve a course’s intended learning outcomes.
