Playfulness abounds in dazzling Dutch designer Femke Agema's fashions | Studio Art and Art History | Scoop.it

For Elders, her 2013 spring/summer range, she took inspiration from our primordial emotional response to the onset of spring, “the simple joy we feel in being let loose into the wild to play in an environment overflowing with possibilities.”

Surrounded by Beauty

Surrounded by Beauty | Studio Art and Art History | Scoop.it

There is no equivalent in the many Native American languages for the word art. Yet the objects here suggest that Native Americans are a highly spiritual people who create objects of extraordinary beauty. In Native American thought there is also no distinction between what is beautiful or functional, and what is sacred or secular. Design goes far beyond concerns of function, and beauty is much more than simple appearances. For many native peoples, beauty arises from living in harmony with the order of the universe. The concerns and aspirations of a vital contemporary American Indian population changes as the world changes. Today some Native American artists continue traditions of their ancestors, while others transform those traditions in new and innovative ways.

The Homemade Hand Puppets of Bauhaus Artist Paul Klee

The Homemade Hand Puppets of Bauhaus Artist Paul Klee | Studio Art and Art History | Scoop.it

To mark his son Felix’s ninth birthday, Klee fashioned eight hand puppets based on stock characters from Kasperl and Gretl — Germany’s answer to Punch and Judy. Olek: Becoming One’s Art for “The End Is Far”

Olek: Becoming One’s Art for “The End Is Far” | Studio Art and Art History | Scoop.it

For Olek, the past year has seen endless legal battles in London, which led to a brief incarceration and house arrest. During this time, it must have seemed as if a long road was ahead of her. The majority of the work on display at her recently opened show at Jonathan Levine Gallery was made during this time in London, when the end was indeed far. However, don’t let the image of Olek crocheting away in a cell paint a disparate image of the installations that the artist created during this time in her life. The spectacle that one has come to expect from energetic and vibrant artist has only intensified. The speakers have been turned up to 11, if you will.
