State funds will allow Leominster, Fitchburg to plan innovative schools - Sentinel & Enterprise | Students with dyslexia & ADHD in independent and public schools | Scoop.it
LEOMINSTER -- Leominster High Schools Center for Technical Education needs a makeover for the 21st century, according to Schools Superintendent James R.The innovation schools are similar in concept to charter schools, said Secretary of Education Paul Reville.

Dyslexia at MIT: Most common learning difference!

Dyslexia at MIT: Most common learning difference! | Students with dyslexia & ADHD in independent and public schools | Scoop.it

The ability to read has long been linked in society's mind to intelligence, but dyslexia is surprisingly common at MIT, to such an extent that the founder of the MIT Media Lab and the One Laptop per Child Association, Nicholas Negroponte (a dyslexic himself), called it the MIT disease in his autobiography. Recent research has found that dyslexia is not related to IQ. It is, however, the most common learning disability, at MIT and elsewhere, affecting between 5% and 20% of the population.

What science tells us about the incredible shrinking childhood.

Now most researchers seem to agree on one thing: Breast budding in girls is starting earlier. The debate has shifted to what this means. Puberty, in girls, involves three events: the growth of breasts, the growth of pubic hair and a first period. Typically the changes unfold in that order, and the process takes about two years. But the data show a confounding pattern. While studies have shown that the average age of breast budding has fallen significantly since the 1970s, the average age of first period, or menarche, has remained fairly constant, dropping to only 12.5 from 12.8 years. Why would puberty be starting earlier yet ending more or less at the same time?

"Since people learn from people they love," he writes in the same column, "education is fundamentally about the relationship between a teacher and student. By insisting on constant informal contact and by preserving that contact year after year, The New American Academy has the potential to create richer, mentorlike or even familylike relationships for students who are not rich in those things."

Amen, Mr. Brooks.
