As millions suffer Dr.s, educators & psychologists STILL arguing about diagnostic criteria! | Students with dyslexia & ADHD in independent and public schools | Scoop.it
On Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, the Big Picture Film Team sent out a “Dyslexia Alert” e-mail in regard to the removal of dyslexia from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) to be published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) is the manual used by mental health professionals for a diagnosis of mental and neurodevelopmental disorders.

The DSM-5 is scheduled to be published in May 2013 and it is the first major update that the manual has undergone since 1994. The Roman numerals which had been attached to DSM since its second edition (i.e. previous DSM-IV) is being changed in order to use the manual in the new technological environment “of the 21st century”.

According to the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-5 Development website, the DSM-5 “is intended to be a manual for assessment and diagnosis of mental disorders and will not include information or guidelines for treatment for any disorder.”

Thank you @APHumanGeog for: Video tutorial: How to use geteach.com

This provies the basic overview of the layout and function of http://geteach.com .  The video unlocks some great features that are not intended to be hidden, but many first time visitors tend to miss.

This is a phenomenal site, designed by an AP teacher to bring geospatial technologies into the classroom in a way that is incredibly user-friendly. This site allows you to use Google Earth with clickable layers. With multiple data layers of physical and human geography variables, this interactive globe puts spatial information in powerful, yet fun, student-inspired platform.

TY! @APHumanGeog for #6 Worldmapper: The world as you've never seen it before

TY! @APHumanGeog for #6 Worldmapper: The world as you've never seen it before | Students with dyslexia & ADHD in independent and public schools | Scoop.it

"Worldmapper is a collection of world maps, where territories are re-sized on each map according to the subject of interest."

#6 on the Top 10 list of 2011 resources is this mapping website that provides us with another way to present global datasets in a way that is more visually appealing and more intuitive to analyze and interpret the patterns.  Among the many compelling cartograms on this site is this one showing the prevalance of HIV, highlighting the disproportionate impacts of AIDS/HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa.

TY @APHumanGeog for a very cool ap: Map My Followers

TY @APHumanGeog for a very cool ap: Map My Followers | Students with dyslexia & ADHD in independent and public schools | Scoop.it

This is not on the Top 10 list, only because it receives my "Best Geography Twitter App of the Year Award."  This is a great site that combines the power of geography, social media and geospatial technologies.  You can map where your twitter followers are (if they make the data publicly available).  Additionally, you can pan, zoom and identify specific followers and map their networks.  Can you find yourself on this map (followers of @APHumanGeog)?
