I’ve been reading this book by Jane Mcgonigal on the effect of and reasons why millions of people of all ages are turning to online gaming and online virtual environments. Here’s Jane at TED http://ow.ly/fr2Ag ; summarizing the book in 15 minutes. The basic premise is that the continuous feedback and desire for self-improvement becomes the drive to continue."

 

It goes as far as to say that games that have a definitive end and can be won are less appealing. A classic example is “Tetris” which became one of the most popular games in history regardless of not being able to win it! It never ends, you just continue to challenge yourself to last longer each time, whilst receiving continuous visual and sound feedback.

I really feel that gaming and interactive technology is being overlooked to the point of ignorance. So refreshing to hear that this way of thinking is slowly changing.

An in-depth, multimedia look at climate change, its global impact, and efforts to combat it.

 

This guide on climate change from the Council on Foreign Relations (independent think tank) covers many of the geopolitical, economic and environmental issues that confront the Earth as global temperatures rise.  Rather than produce a full length feature film, they have organized the this as an interactive video, allowing the user to get short (a couple of minutes) answer to specific questions about the science, foreign policy or economic ramifications of adapting to climate change.

This map vividly shows how hard the recession is hitting state economies, yet I can’t help but notice that orange strip in the Dakota, Nebraska area and I’m unsure what kind of economy these states have? However, I do know that if it’s related to agriculture they will likely get a shade darker if this drought continues.

It's quite interesting to see the areas of which the local economies are supposedly starting to turn around and what the numbers actually show.
