Amplifying Student Voice and Partnership International Seminar | Hosted by the University of Vermont

Amplifying Student Voice and Partnership International Seminar | Hosted by the University of Vermont | Student Voice | Scoop.it
“Vermont is hosting the first U.S.-based international seminar on “Amplifying Student Voice and Partnership,” on July 6–8 at the University of Vermont (UVM). It is co-hosted by UP for Learning, the Pennsylvania State College of Education, and UVM. The goal will be to identify means to elevate student voice and youth-adult partnership further in learning and school change internationally by exploring themes of implementation, evaluation, and sustainability; mobilizing collective resources; and increasing participants’ roles as advocates. Researchers, leaders in teacher training programs, field-based organizations, and practitioners will explore core dilemmas and research-based solutions to the challenges of elevating student voice. Participants are traveling to Vermont from six countries, 15 colleges and universities spanning ten states, eight community-based organizations serving youth in four different states, and high schools—including both youth and adult representatives—from three states. A number of Vermont Agency of Education policy leaders will also attend. This group will be committed to strengthening the bridge between the research and practitioner realms, in order to advance the work they recognize as fundamental to the integrity of school redesign here and abroad.”

I chose this article/video because it shows students discussing segregation, as it still exists in our society as a norm.

I hope others would view this video and be inspired to engage their students in open discussions about social issues and close the gap of understanding between students and societal norms.

Figured Worlds of Citizenship

This article explores how two elementary school students responded to their teacher’s invitation in a civic classroom to make a difference to the world. We consider how the teacher framed the construct of civic efficacy and how the students refracted these ideas in their navigation of a civic education project. Closely analyzing these students’ experiences and responses, we question what differences are made when students are encouraged to think of themselves as citizens who can make a difference. Noting dissonances and ambivalences in the students’ responses, the conceptual resources of “figured worlds” enable an analysis of the interplay of discourses, interactions, sensory experiences, and material artifacts as civic identities are constituted. The two students’ differing responses are analyzed in relation to other figured worlds that students and teachers daily negotiate: of compliant citizenship, productive citizenship, and consumer citizenship. The overlaps, dissonances, and/or divergences in discourses and artifacts from various figured worlds of citizenship render some students more recognizable as civically “engaged” and “efficacious” than others.

Students as Allies in School Reform

Students as Allies in School Reform | Student Voice | Scoop.it
Eight years ago, with support from MetLife Foundation, WKCD launched 'Students as Allies in School Reform.' In five cities, we helped students and teachers conduct survey research about their own schools, then supported dialogue and action around their findings. To our amazement, the surveys we used in ’03 have been downloaded more than 150,000 times from WKCD.org! We decided it was time to refresh the surveys—and to invite students and teachers nationwide to join a 2011 call to engage students as stakeholders in improving their schools.
