lyn_hay's insight:

Provides an insight into the expectations of college/university lecturers when designing inquiry-based assignments for students. An analysis of the elements of these assignments revealed that academics design assignments for 1st year university students with the expectation that these students bring with them an existing set of understandings, skills and dispositions with regard to 'researching assignments'. The study identifies a number of ways teacher librarians could be targeting student skill development. A lot of these findings support the research evidence published by Kuhlthau re students' information seeking and knowledge building experiences, and the range of instructional interventions she suggests while students undertake inquiry projects.

School libraries help students learn...

This is what I believe. And my research (and the research of many others!) supports this belief.

I use this blog to share new research and literature highlighting the many ways school libraries support teaching and learning in schools, with a particular focus on curating research findings on the impact of school libraries on student learning, and advocating for the teacher librarianship profession.

New ACER report: What the Staff in Australia's Schools survey tell us about teachers working in school libraries

lyn_hay's insight:
This research report by ACER draws upon the national Staff in Australia's School survey data that is now being collected every 3 years. One of the findings of most concern is the number of teachers working in school libraries who do not have a library qualification. Unfortunately the survey does not specifically ask whether participants hold a dual qualification in teacher librarianship. This would provide a more accurate picture of the status of teacher librarian positions in Australia's schools.

Colorado's Highly Effective School Library Program (HESLP) Rubric

Colorado's Highly Effective School Library Program (HESLP) Rubric | Student Learning through School Libraries | Scoop.it

The new HESLP rubric is designed to foster partnerships and collaborations based on mutual support and ongoing dialogue between teacher-librarians and their administrators.
This revised rubric highlights student-centered learning, emphasized in the Colorado Academic and Common Core Standards. Teacher-librarians can use the rubric to identify where they can have a greater impact on student learning.
This 2016 rubric represents a change in thinking about how teacher-librarians and library programs are viewed and valued. This rubric emphasizes teacher leadership and values collaboration among administrators, staff, students and the community—shifting the view from that of a support role to that of a guide for staff and students to transform learning practice. Most importantly, it also opens the conversation for how teachers and teacher-librarians are designing student-centric learning opportunities and collecting evidence of their impact on student learning.

lyn_hay's insight:

This rubric uses the performance scale of Basic - Partially Proficient - Proficient - Accomplished - Exemplary, with descriptors of each level. I think this can be used to assist teacher librarians in developing their role statement and informing their professional learning plan for the year. It is certainly a powerful document to help inform a conversation between a TL and their principal, particularly with regard to their role as a teacher.

* help students use a variety of sources when information-gathering

* teach students how to use digital resources

* help students use technology to organise and share information

* help students apply critical-thinking skills

* facilitate opportunities for student-led inquiry

Also note the dramatic increase in ebooks as part of the school library collection with 88% of school libraries providing wireless internet access.

What’s in a Makerspace? - Evidence of school library impact by school principal | Student Learning through School Libraries | Scoop.it

"In this post, Eric Sheninger describes the secrets to New Milford High School's Makerspace, and how every school can build a Makerspace."

lyn_hay's insight:

Eric Sheninger is one of those school principals you'd just love to clone. What I like about this article is that it is the school principal  (not the teacher librarian) who is publishing evidence of his school library's impact on student learning.

And his conclusion says it all!! "The Makerspace in the library is an oasis for student self-directed learning. It serves as a rejuvenation center for inspiring of love for both formal and informal learning. In my opinion, a space like this should be a priority for all schools in the twenty-first century; and you do not have to break the bank to create one."

This vision of a makerspace as place and program fits well with my iCentre concept for schools - see http://studentslearn.wordpress.com/about/about-icentres/ for details.

FAIR's Impact of the Great School Libraries Report 2016

In October 2015, FAIR (Freedom of Access to Information and Resources) joined with the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), ALIA Schools, Australian School Library Association (ASLA), Queensland School Library Association, School Library Association of NSW, School Library Association of South Australia, School Library Association of Victoria and the Western Australian School Library Association to seek nominations of Great School Libraries across the nation.
We were looking for libraries that help children and young people find reliable information; use the information effectively; think critically; make informed decisions; work productively with others; build knowledge and understanding of the world; safely navigate the internet; communicate and share their ideas; and find great reads to meet personal interests and abilities.
Nearly 600 students, teachers, parents, principals, library staff and other members of the community nominated their school libraries and told us why they deserved the accolade of being named a Great School Library.
The campaign provided us with many different answers to the question ‘what do school libraries do’.
lyn_hay's insight:
As a result of collecting nearly 600 nominations from students, teachers, parents, principals, library staff and other members of the community across Australia, who identified their school library as being a "Great School Library", FAIR analysed data from these nominations to answer the question "What do school libraries do?"

The report identified three primary drivers for school library to help achieve the best outcomes for students. These included:

Reading
Giving every child a reading start and keeping them reading through their teenage years.

Digital literacy
Making sure students are confident and safe users of the latest technology, media and applications.

Critical thinking and research
Ensuring students understand how to access information and critically assess its rigour, quality and relevance, and helping students improve their school performance and preparing them for further education.

Ebooks Can be a Great Choice for Middle Schoolers

Ebooks Can be a Great Choice for Middle Schoolers | Student Learning through School Libraries | Scoop.it

A middle-school librarian conducted his own research on ebooks. What he found out now guides his collection development—and may be the answer to the “middle school drop-off” in pleasure reading.

This article presents some interesting local findings of this teacher librarian's ebook program, including a small percentage of students preferring to use the ebook format over print so they can read what they want without fear of social stigmas. This is an aspect of ebook access that I had not previously considered. Thanks to Christopher Schiemann for sharing these findings from his EBP efforts.

Becoming and Being: Reflections on Teacher-Librarianship Volume 2 (pdf)

Becoming and Being: Reflections on Teacher-Librarianship Volume 2 (pdf) | Student Learning through School Libraries | Scoop.it
lyn_hay's insight:

This new ebook has been written by recent graduates of  University of Alberta's MEdTL program. The book presents chapters under 5 broad aspects of the teacher librarian experience:

* Becoming and being a teacher librarian
* TLs engaging and supporting students
* TLs becoming and being literacy leaders
* TLs becoming and being technology leaders

* TLs becoming and being school leaders

What I particularly like about this book is the chapter structure where all authors were asked to used this 4 point framework:

* Why should school leaders care …?
* What do school leaders need to know…?
* What can school leaders do about … ?
* What does this mean for school leaders…?

The framework expects school principals, and others playing a leadership role in the school, to take responsibility for developing, implementing and evaluating an effective school library program.

Congratulations to editors, Jennifer Branch-Mueller and Wei Wei, and program supporter, Dianne Oberg. This is a powerful way of giving new TL graduates a voice as authors, while providing professional learning material for those currently enrolled in a Masters in TLship program, for TL practitioners and school leaders.

Case study on teacher union partnership with school library association to support status of school libraries in British Columbia

American Association of School Librarians, Vol.18. Retrieved http://www.ala.org/aasl/sites/ala.org.aasl/files/content/aaslpubsandjournals/slr/vol18/SLR_UnionActiveSchoolLib_V18.pdf

lyn_hay's insight:

Very few states or provinces in the US, Canada and Australia still have this kind of active partnership between the teachers' union and the school library professional association. But this case study shows how difficult even teacher unions find it to advocate for school library positions in schools. Although, one advantage of union support is the union's access to school-based data on staffing etc. Well worth a read if you are fortunate to be working in an education system with teacher union support.

The South Carolina School Library Impact Study

The South Carolina School Library Impact Study | Student Learning through School Libraries | Scoop.it
lyn_hay's insight:

This portal provides access to the Phase 1 and Phase 2 reports of the 'The Impact of School Librarians and Library Programs on Academic Achievement of Students: The South Carolina Study' commissioned by the South Carolina Association of School Librarians (SCASL). The infographic briefly summarising school library impacts is very effective and I would like to see further research reports on school library impact developing an infographic as part of their executive summary.

I was particularly interested in the results of the administrator, teacher and school librarian surveys (reported in the Phase 2 report), where the three educator groups consistently endorsed instructional collaboration between

librarians and teachers and, school librarians "serving as teachers of new information skills to classroom teachers".

The majority of administrators surveyed considered instructional collaboration essential, and supported flexible scheduling of school library access and consideration of collaboration when evaluating teachers.

Teachers and the school librarians also associated the frequency of collaboration-related activities with their assessments of library teaching of state standards. Other collaborative activities noted as important in school library programs included the provision of class visits on a flexible schedule, individual students being allowed to visit the library during class time, and teacher-initiated collaboration with librarians in classrooms, and librarians teaching new skills to teachers.

I highly recommend all teacher librarians, no matter what state or country you work in, to examine the findings from Phase 2 to assist in strengthening your role as a teacher and collaborator of learning, as well as gaining insights into developing a greater partnership with your school principal/administrator as a team who leads learning.

School Libraries | State of America's Libraries Report 2014

School Libraries | State of America's Libraries Report 2014 | Student Learning through School Libraries | Scoop.it
The School Libraries section of the 2014 State of America's Libraries Report provides an overview of the top school library trends of the past year.
School libraries are at a critical point: Budget and testing pressures have led to decisions to eliminate or deprofessionalize school libraries, but the increased emphasis on college and career readiness and the integration of technology makes them more critical than ever. School librarians’ collaboration with other educators is key to literacy and imlementation of Common Core State Standards. The American Library Association (ALA) is undertaking an advocacy campaign for school libraries that sets goals in five critical areas.
lyn_hay's insight:

The American Library Association has just released this year 'State of America's Libraries Report 2014'. While the whole report is a must-read for all information professionals, some of the trends and issues identified in this report highlight the significant contribution a school library and teacher librarian can make to student learning. It's quite sad to read about the power and potential of school libraries as transformative learning spaces, followed by increasing budget cuts that are gutting schools of their library and qualified library media specialists.

It just shows how important it is for every TL practitioner to collect, analyse and report on the evidence of their impact.

I particularly like ALA President, Barbara Stripling's suggestion for school library programs to focus on the five critical areas of literacy, inquiry, social and emotional growth, creativity and imagination, and thoughtful use of technology. I think this represents the TL profession's core business as information and learning leaders in schools.

This is a powerful claim: "...rethinking the library’s role is changing education at the Albemarle school". This story about innovations at Monticello High School library shows how the tracking of student and teacher interactions with the school library before and after infrastructure and program changes can be used to demonstrate impact. Receiving a state-based school board association award is also evidence of impact.
