Studies show that over 7 million individuals in the U.S who have sustained a stroke still have to live with the minor side effects/after effects. when it comes down to it, knowing the symptoms and acting fast can aid in a fast recovery. only about "10 percent of stroke survivors recover almost completely
25 percent recover with minor impairments
40 percent experience moderate to severe impairments requiring special care
10 percent require care in a nursing home or other long-term care facility
15 percent die shortly after the stroke."

Hemorrhagic stroke- what doctors have to do is try and control bleeding and pressure in the brain. Patients have to be closely monitored to watch blood pressure and other symptoms. if a brain aneurysm is ruptured, surgery is required to repair it. A brain aneurysm is the wall of the artery that supplies blood to the brain. Medicine can be given to patients to help with the stroke also.

The most important thing after fully recovering from a stroke is preventing another stroke. People can do many things to help prevent another stroke, some things are, maintaining a healthy weight, do not smoke, do not drink that much, exercise, also take some medication.

the most promising type of clot busting treatment doctors use is the tPA method. with the use of an iv, the clot is dissolved before any major damage occurs. it has to be given within the three hour period of finding the symptoms of the stroke though.

New brain 'injection' treatment gives hope to 20,000 stroke sufferers

New brain 'injection' treatment gives hope to 20,000 stroke sufferers | Strokes.treatment | Scoop.it
Technique of inserting drugs in the brain could help thousands of patients who suffer a bleeding stroke, or brain haemorrhage, for which there is currently no surgical treatment.
jason mcalister's insight:

surgens have made a new system to get rid of large ping pong sized clots in the brain. By injecting a drug directly into the brain. "A study shows that clots were removed in 50 per cent of patients given medication directly into the brain, compared with just 5 per cent of patients receiving standard care."  surgeons did a test on multiple patients by cutting a small hole into the head and a catheter is forced into the clot.  The clot is liquified after three days of using the drug and is taken out with the catheter. "the procedure removed 57 per cent of clots on average."

knowing if you have a stroke can save your life. Although doctors have found ways to restore blood flow into the brain, doctors found that 40-70% of people do not make it to the hospital in time to receive the treatment.

jason mcalister's insight:

thrombolytics, a way to reinforce blood circulation to the brain. The drug "dissolves" clots that are blocking the blood flow.  "In June, 1996, the “clot-buster” Activase® (Alteplase recombinant) became the first acute ischemic stroke treatment to be approved by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Activase is also known as tissue plasminogen activator (tPA)."

tPA, a natural enzyme found in the blood that jumpstarts plasminogens to break down the blood clot. Iv is also another way doctors use tPA in order to speed up the process. tPA should be used within three hours of recognizing the symptoms.

MERCI, another clot removing system for stroke patients. this is for the patients who fail with the iv, cannot take the iv, or begin getting care for the stroke after the three hour period. "The system is a tiny cork-screw shaped device that works by wrapping around the clot and trapping it. The clot is then retrieved and removed from the body."
