Although taking a break seems like the last thing you have time for in the middle of a busy day, sometimes it proves to be beneficial to productivity. Often, I spend hours sitting at a desk doing homework and don't even realize when the sun has set and it's already time to go to bed. I feel as if I haven't accomplished anything, and go to bed even more stressed. What I never realized was the importance of taking breaks to unwind and de-stress. If I ever have writer's block or just can't figure out a problem, I will take a walk out in nature—after all, not only does it relieve stress, but it's healthy!
With the stress put on high school students to do well in school, play sports, participate in extracurricular activities, and get into college, there is hardly enough time for students to sit down and relax. As a senior in high school, I have been burdened with AP classes, college applications, and time-consuming extracurricular activities, and I hardly ever find time to breathe. I’ve found that yoga has been effective in helping me relax, even if it’s only for thirty minutes a day. Not only does it take me away from the stresses burdening my mind, but it also helps clear my mind and focus on what is in front of me. Anyone who is interested in finding a calming activity to participate in (and this does not only include students!) should attempt yoga—while it boosts your mood, it also helps you physically and mentally.
As a high school student, it is often difficult to find time to relax between homework, extracurricular activities, a social life, and sleep. The amount of stress this puts on students is often more overwhelming than they tend to realize. Yoga is such a simple and easy way to relieve stress, even if it's just for 30 minutes a day. It combines the benefits of relaxation with strength exercise, both of which are important in mental health. By just taking several minutes out of your day to relax and breathe, you could be changing your health for the better.
