Summing up the problem: higher education is overpriced, out of touch, and outdated in both curriculum and purpose. The solution? The solution is beginning to emerge in many places today....
Antonio Figueiredo's insight:

“Higher education is overpriced, out of touch, and outdated in both curriculum and purpose.” “Historically, the classical university was based on the unity of research and teaching and served the purpose of conveying mostly theoretical knowledge.” (...) We are now “ foreshadowing the next evolutionary stage based on the unity of research, teaching, and societal transformation, with transformation literacy at its core -- that is, literacy in the personal, relational, and systemic foundations of leading profound innovation and change.”

Chomsky: How America's Great University System Is Getting Destroyed

Antonio Figueiredo's insight:

The transcript of Noam Chomsky's Skype interview of February 4, 2014, about the destruction of the university system, the hiring of temporary academics, the so called "shared governance", the alleged need of "flexibility", the purpose of education and how education ought to be, the love of teaching, the use of corporate rhetoric against corporatization, and the need to resist and act.

The "wall mart" model is based on temporary workers. Their instability let work cost low and workers "obedient".

Chomsky is an old distinguished professor, worth to be listened. But his arguments seem not to be based on quantitative analysis. ... Is american University self-destroying? Hasn't it enough active countermeasures to adapt itself to its possible bad results?

Enrico De Angelis's curator insight, December 26, 2013 4:27 PM

Alexandre Afonso, Lecturer @King’s College in Political Economy, is a blogger who writes also about Academia and PhDs and recently did comparing Academia to the lowest level of criminal societies like drug gangs.

Very quickly from his post:

 - a massive expansion in PhD number all across OECD

 - they hope permanent positions as professor and high salaries

 - professorships are not expanding (shrinking) at the same rate

 - they renounce income and securities

In USA, more than 40% of teaching staff at universities are part-time faculty without tenure, or adjunct lecturers paid per course given, with no health insurance or the kind of other things associated with a standard employment relationship.
In Germany there are relatively good conditions for PhD and good jobs at the top, but nothing in the middle, for Doctors! And the average time length from PhD to professorship has increased substantially.
UK is the biggest academic market in Europe and lectureships provide secure employment for relatively young academics, but also there higher education relies on a large workforce of outsiders, with very few rights (see the “zero-hour contracts” at UK universities).

This is true, there are many agents, agencies, websites, and so forth "recruiting" students who plan to go abroad; the question remains though who/what to trust. My answer (although not a good one!) for students would simply be do research and more research, GOOGLE as much as possible about waht you are getting into before you get into it...!
