Making Open Educational Resources Count

Making Open Educational Resources Count | Strategy and Social Media | Scoop.it
An interesting post about the questions of creating OER and digital labor - http://t.co/CGS2T5OsDy

Via Dr. Susan Bainbridge
Alex Grech's insight:

What I find really interesting in this piece is the need for academic institutions to recognise that disruption can also happen from 'within' - the younger or more curious members of faculty who are using the tools they can find to improve the quality of teaching and learning.

That 'Useless' Liberal Arts Degree Has Become Tech's Hottest Ticket

That 'Useless' Liberal Arts Degree Has Become Tech's Hottest Ticket | Strategy and Social Media | Scoop.it
Stop thinking of Silicon Valley as an engineer's paradise. There's far more work for liberal arts majors -- who know how to sell and humanize.
Alex Grech's insight:

This is precisely the reason why I decided way back that my PhD had to be grounded in the liberal arts, as opposed to 'business'.  Reading Gramsci and Fairclough for a while can help you remarkably in thinking sideways.

If you can Google it, why teach it?

If you can Google it, why teach it? | Strategy and Social Media | Scoop.it
With Google in the classroom, teachers should reimagine lessons for the device generation.
Alex Grech's insight:

It may well be that we have to focus on the familiar and the mainstream - the Google algorithm and Online Search - to try and cajole education out of its 20th century rut.  We are still a long way from some tipping point where teaching institutions and paid educators dispense with the notion of education as knowledge and information transfer via transmission channels and embrace co-learning, connected learning, flipped classrooms, learning outcomes....   We need to reimagine  teaching as much as need to reinvent the classroom.  It may just be that we have to rely on the very results of online search to bring something 'new' into the bricks and mortar classroom to  stimulate discussion, debate, thinking sideways.

Prof, no one is reading you

Prof, no one is reading you | Strategy and Social Media | Scoop.it
Many of the world's most talented thinkers may be university professors, but sadly most of them are not shaping today's public debates or influencing policies.
Alex Grech's insight:

This reminds me of conversations with an eminent academic while I navigated through my PhD.  In the end we negotiated a mutually-beneficial compromise.  I gained invaluable insights into political philosophy over conversations fueled by caffeine.  He got himself online journal that I set up over OJS.

Is social media really a waste of time? Harvard professor gets it wrong

Is social media really a waste of time? Harvard professor gets it wrong | Strategy and Social Media | Scoop.it
A prominent author tells brands that social media will not help their bottom line. Marketing leaders think differently.

Via Dr. Susan Bainbridge
Alex Grech's insight:

As usual, these things are never in black and white.  Looking for a direct, linear relationship between social media 'marketing' and the bottom seems equally flawed.

Social Media and the Cost of Caring

Social Media and the Cost of Caring | Strategy and Social Media | Scoop.it
Frequent use of social media is not directly related to higher stress. But stress can be contagious through social media channels: Social media users are often more aware of the stressful events in others' lives, and this awareness itself can lead to higher stress.
Alex Grech's insight:

This Pew Research Center survey of 1,801 adults examines the extent to which their lives have become more stressful as a result of the widespread use of social media.

Will Google Sell All Your Emails to Your Grandchildren?

Will Google Sell All Your Emails to Your Grandchildren? | Strategy and Social Media | Scoop.it
In 40 years will Google, Facebook and Visa sell all your emails, photos, and purchase history to your grandchildren? The Sony hack has reminded us that nearly everything we say and do here in the early 21st century will be on the record forever. And we better be prepared for the historians of tomorrow to pick through every piece of it.
Alex Grech's insight:

There's something mildly Orwellian in the notion of our interactions and discourse on social media being sold for the private gain of others in the future.  Let's face it, Zuckerberg and friends have youth on their side to play more games in the future.  And sell this as a 'service for the private good'.

Developing a National Lifelong Learning Strategy

Developing a National Lifelong Learning Strategy | Strategy and Social Media | Scoop.it
It’s not every day that you are asked to develop the Lifelong Learning Strategy for your country.  Lifelong learning has become a loaded term within the EU context, with interpretations that range from ‘learning throughout life for personal empowerment’ to ‘learning basic skills’ to secure employment in the labour-market.   So it was clear to …
Alex Grech's insight:

The Lifelong Learning Strategy 2020 has now been published for public consultation.  ‘Learning through life’ should not simply be an activity we are obliged to follow for economic reasons, but our fundamental right as citizens in an inclusive society.

These are some quick observations on strategic planning based on the process I managed to develop the LLL Strategy 2020.

The Web We Need to Give Students

The Web We Need to Give Students - Bright - Medium
Giving students their own digital domain is a radical act. It gives them the ability to work on the Web and with the Web, to have their scholarship be meaningful and accessible by others. It allows them to demonstrate their learning to others beyond the classroom walls. To own one’s domain gives students an understanding of how Web technologies work. It puts them in a much better position to control their work, their data, their identity online.
Alex Grech's insight:

This may be one way we may start to empower young people about their digital footprint, address privacy concerns and generally get them to be more digitally literate.

How Twitter Users Can Generate Better Ideas

How Twitter Users Can Generate Better Ideas | Strategy and Social Media | Scoop.it
There's a link between the amount of diversity in employees’ Twitter networks and the quality of their ideas.
Alex Grech's insight:

I continue to find much value in Twitter as a serendipity and 'of the moment' research tool.   If you use lists strategically, for instance, you are fishing with both long and short rods - as this article mentions, the 'happenstance' of a post found via Twitter may eventually translate into a blog monitored on NetVibes or some other dashboard tool.  And somehow, 'meeting of minds' can also happen.  I found myself co-learning on one of Howard Rheingold's online courses via a tweet.  Twitter has been the reason for many happy accidents, despite the dominance of the tool by mainstream broadcasters.

Digital Natives, Yet Strangers to the Web

Digital Natives, Yet Strangers to the Web | Strategy and Social Media | Scoop.it
he curriculum, which is designed primarily for high-school students (though he says it can be adapted for younger kids, too), includes a dozen teaching modules that would be integrated into various classes—from "Privacy" and "A is for Algorithm" to "Digital Activism" and "Cyberpsychology." Other units under development include "Remix Culture," "Gaming in Education," and "Reality—Virtual/Actual." In some ways, it could be described as the liberal arts of virtual living.
Alex Grech's insight:

Whether to acquire social capital or because we think it's good for their education, we inevitably invest in making sure young people are equipped with latest gadgets.  Yet we invest little time and money in ensuring that our education systems go beyond scare-mongering and start to contribute to critical thinking about the dialectic between technology and everyday life.  Digital citizenship continues to be a buzz-word for the few, or (worse) confused with 'new marketing skills'.

This article is a good primer on the programs we need to introduce in the classroom - and the boardroom.

In the face of overwhelming evidence of Facebook's dominance of our online discourse and behaviour, It's far too early for anyone to crow about its imminent demise.  Yet there is some truth in the assertion about the growing 'collective unease' about the network's use of 'small lives' as fair game for data management and monetisation.  Or the fact that it's not yet a 'winner takes all' scenario in the social media network space.
