Strategy Storytelling - A Primer - The Alpha Strategies

Strategy Storytelling - A Primer - The Alpha Strategies | Strategy and Leadership | Scoop.it
Strategy storytelling is coming on fast. It is the next big thing in strategy and the future of strategy communication. Research shows that strategy understanding is at an awful low throughout the organization.
Chad Manske's insight:

It's one thing to have a tight, well-focused, strategy, but how do you communicate it internally, and externally?  Telling the story allows for shared understanding and buy-in within the organization, and by doing so externally, allows clients and other organizations better understand your company or organization.

How To Read Way More Books (And, Thus, Know Way More Stuff)

How To Read Way More Books (And, Thus, Know Way More Stuff) | Strategy and Leadership | Scoop.it
Humanity has learned a lot of stuff. Most of it is in books. So we should read more of them. Here's how.
Chad Manske's insight:

Many of you know my insatiable appetite for reading.  At certain stretches in my career I have read so much I sometimes have forgotten what I've read, but when reminded of what I've read I can remember and recall a lot of detail from a specific book.  Why does this matter and why should you care?  Reading widely and out of your area of expertise naturally forces you into a mode of "comparative familiarity" where you try to relate what you've read to your current job, life etc.  You may even try to apply some of the material you've come across to the challenges you face at home and work.  Lastly, reading widely and often contributes to enhancing your problem solving skill set--a skill we all need to keep sharp in the course of our work and other activities

On Transformational Leadership | Strategy and Leadership | Scoop.it
Often shareholders appoint transformational leaders to turnaround firms. This is not always the best approach. Leadership approach depends on context.

Via Don Dea
Chad Manske's insight:

We often talk past one another with pre-conceived notions defining leadership.  We also qualify the kind of leadership we mean.  This piece defines leadership, and the seven kinds (according to the author) in context with tranformational leadership specifically.

Don Dea's curator insight, August 30, 2013 10:26 PM

Across small and medium sized firms (SMEs) deemed to be failing or simply not performing to stakeholder expectations, there is a tendency for boards to parachute leaders into the CEO post and expect transformational leadership.  Leaders in this case are selected for their heroism, charisma and drive

Career Coach: Good leaders share leadership and power
Washington Post
There may be many reasons for bad bosses, but one that really seems offensive to many of us is that of power-hungry leaders.
Chad Manske's insight:

Great, even good, leaders are sensible enough to communicate well with their employees.  Working for and with power hoarders makes things hard for the entire organization--which usually can't advance past the inbox mentality.

The Six Key Elements of Strategic Thinking

The Six Key Elements of Strategic Thinking | Strategy and Leadership | Scoop.it
In a time of unprecedented uncertainty in the business landscape, strategic leadership is more critical than ever.
Chad Manske's insight:

Strategic planning seems to be an undervalued, yet critical, function in today's work environment.  The statistic in this piece, that "according to Chief Executive Magazine, seven out of 10 leaders are not strategic," does not surprise me.  First, there is a paucity of executive education in this are that business schools should be eager to teach.  It is not easy work...frankly, it's very HARD work, yet necessary for the viability and long-term potential of any organization.  In this piece, the author covers the Six Elements of Strategic Thinking including the ability to: anticipate, challenge, interpret, decide, align and learn. While each of these elements has received isolated attention, they become significant in entirely new ways when examined in the context of one comprehensive framework.

Preparing an Organization to Sustain Capable Leadership - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly http://t.co/gTHuH1w8hh #CommunityAction
Chad Manske's insight:

I'm always amazed through my experiences how little is done in preparing for leadership transitions.  Maybe it's just me, but I always approach the event with deliberation and forethought to ensure the continuity of the organization's heartbeat never skips, and I encourage my subordniates to do the same.  There is nothing worse, in my humble view, than to ill-prepare a successor to take the reins.  It not only slows the momentum an organization is making towards long-term goals, it will tend to cast the outgoing leader in a poor light as time marches on.  Don't we care about our organizations and their heartbeat--the people?  Do your part not to let it happen on your watch.  Here is an excellent, if lengthy, piece on strategies for successful transitions.  Highly recommend!

Servant leadership doesn't come naturally to most leaders, and for that reason, those trying to apply a formulaic approach often fail.  Instead, servant leadership's foundation begins in the heart, and is balanced by a leader's time management to get the most productivity out of their subordinates.

Chad Manske's insight:

Timing, service before self, and vision.  All very good leadership lessons to extract from the Civil War.  The timing lesson is interesting to me because it's also about properly deliberating on big decisions rather than hastily making a potentially bad decision.  as many of you know, I am also well-enamored to casting a clear vision for the organization--how can you lead your people if no one clearly understands the path to get there?
