3 Reasons Writing Is Great for Your Mental Health

3 Reasons Writing Is Great for Your Mental Health | Strategy and Leadership | Scoop.it
According to a stack of studies, regular writing is great for your mental health.
Chad Manske's insight:
I'm personally a big believer in this concept! Most of my academic military writing is behind me, however, I still take the opportunity to pen an op-Ed or write a book review and get them published. Doing so helps me organize my thoughts for clarity and ultimately makes me a better leader. It takes time and discipline, but it's worth it!

10 Principles of Strategic Leadership

10 Principles of Strategic Leadership | Strategy and Leadership | Scoop.it
How to develop and retain leaders who can guide your organization through times of fundamental change.
Chad Manske's insight:
A well-written piece with a lot of examples to action this concept in your own career and subordinates.  From the article: "These leaders tend to have several common personality traits: They can challenge the prevailing view without provoking outrage or cynicism; they can act on the big and small picture at the same time, and change course if their chosen path turns out to be incorrect; and they lead with inquiry as well as advocacy, and with engagement as well as command, operating all the while from a deeply held humility and respect for others." I especially like item 5--having access to other strategists...as an educated and trained/experienced military strategist I am part of a closed Facebook group of 300+ military strategists who constantly share ideas and information, thereby constantly sharpening us all.  Read this piece!

The United States military faces uncertainty on several fronts in the

surge to former levels?  Will the U.S. ever complete the mission in
Afghanistan?  In what ways will Russian aggression and Chinese expansionism
shape training?  How significant a role will cyber warfare play in future
conflicts? American military leaders, especially junior leaders, must be
prepared to confront these uncertainties; to do so, below are three broad
areas critical to military leadership of the future.

The Truth About Authentic Leaders

The Truth About Authentic Leaders | Strategy and Leadership | Scoop.it
Is "Be yourself" terrible advice for a leader? Bill George, the creator of the "authentic leadership" approach to management, answers critics and outlines the path for executives to be more effective.
Chad Manske's insight:
Though a lengthier piece than most, Bill George defends the concept of authentic leadership (and I happen to agree with his position) from those in business circles who deny its worth, and in essence promote being someone you're not. Authenticity at work and in all relationships is the conscience-clearing right thing to do.

Work/Life balance is bullshit

Work/Life balance is bullshit. - Desk of van Schneider - Medium
by Tobias van Schneider
first appeared on my private email list.
Chad Manske's insight:
Here's an interesting piece, and from an author who lists himself as unemployed. A number of ideas/assumptions to challenge here that are semantics. First, it is not assumed/implied that (with respect to work/life) one is negative and the other is positive, or that one is evil and one is good--it's about moderation and proportion that defy labels.  He does make some good points about how we often bias specific jobs, like garbage men, without thinking it might have actually been sought and it is something they love to do.  This is the big takeaway from the piece--love your work, then it really doesn't feel like work.

3 Ways to Be Happily Engaged at Work

3 Ways to Be Happily Engaged at Work | Strategy and Leadership | Scoop.it
Don't place blame for your lack of fulfillment. Take charge, make some changes and get on the road to success.
Chad Manske's insight:
What a great topic! In determining what is important on your calendar--assuming you can control much of it--I ruthlessly whittle out meaningless or wasteful meetings and I am always looking for ways to cut out routine meetings unless I have something productive to share/engage.  Our people's time is too valuable to waste it on unproductive sessions and what the author calls 'fake work'--I love that term!  I also like what the author says about measuring the impact of your work with respect to others and your workforce.  For me, I try to empower my people and remove the barriers to their successful production--whatever that may be. If it's merely to provide top cover for my crack staff, and it makes sense to me, that is enough because that sometime is all they want from me and I'm content to use my influence to positively keep things flowing while eliminating miscommunication.

Strategic Plans Are Less Important than Strategic Planning

Strategic Plans Are Less Important than Strategic Planning | Strategy and Leadership | Scoop.it
No plan survives contact with reality.
Chad Manske's insight:
This quote in the article as coined by Winston Churchill says it all: "Plans are of little importance, but planning is essential." Plans themselves gives us a foundation for which we can deviate, and we should understand the implications of deviating. They also contain a lot of intellectual rigor in having gone through structured processes and in making risk decisions such that the flexible planning changes that may become necessary become easier.
