San Francisco's flying car, circa 1920 | Strange days indeed... | Scoop.it
This 1920 photo was taken at the corner of Hoffman and 23rd St., in San Francisco's Noe Valley, on what looks like a rather foggy day. Clearly, geeks in San Fran have been trying to build flying cars for a pretty long time.

Even IceHotels need a #firealarm!

Kevin Ohlén's curator insight, March 21, 5:27 AM
Week 3

This article looks at the ice hotel in Jukkasjaervi, Sweden. I choose this article for the start of this assignment as it shows a bit of where I'm from. Even though I'm Swedish I don't live in a glorified igloo. The hotel has been "standing" for 24 years, every summer the ice melts and every winter they rebuild it again.

The topic of this article is regulations and safety. In this particular case the safety issue is fire. It sounds a bit silly as the whole hotel is made of ice. However, there are items that could possibly get caught on fire. To install fire alarms in every room showed to be quite challenging as the building block of the hotel are moving around little by little. Not to talk about the snow and the humid air. The hotel had no problems to follow the local building regulations. It can be so easy to overlook things that seem incremental at the time being. Luckily no one has been injured by a fire during the 24 years of operation.

If an injury would have occurred the hotel would have been held responsible since they were lacking the required equipment. Even though it sound ridiculous I think it is a necessary thing to have and it eliminates the risk of having small fires. This shows how important it is to follow the local building laws and regulations in order to avoid legal complications. To finish this off I did some research on my own to see how much water they are using for the construction. 30 000 cubic meters of "snis" (snow and ice) and 1 000 tons of ice it what it takes build the hotel on a surface of 5 500 square meters (ICEHOTEL, 2015). Luckily for the nature it all goes back when it melts.
