Just Monkeying Around Storytime
The following are activities for a 3 -4 year old storytime all about monkeys. Included in this storytime are two books to read, multiple songs and rhymes to sing, dances and games to play if there is time. Students will be greeted when they walk into the room with a fake banana to throw into the monkey's mouth (See Feed the Monkey game activity). Once they feed the monkey, they will find a spot on the carpet. The first activity is the reading of Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow. The group will read the story and chant the rhyme together. The other Five Little Monkeys resource on this page has the words, actions and a video that matches the book, so these two activities fit nicely together. The kids will get exercise and work on gross motor skills while doing it. The next activity that the group will perform is a dance to the song, "The Monkey Dance" by the Wiggles. The video is included as a resource on this page so that children can see as well as hear the song and copy the movements. Again, this is a great way to practice gross motor skills and break up the activities where the children are expected to sit during the storytime. When done with that activity, the children will sit on the carpet and listen to Curious George Visits the Zoo by H.A. Rey. They will make predictions about the animals that George will visit at the zoo as well as what type of trouble he might get himself into. If there is time, the group can play a game while listening to the song "Monkey in the Middle" on the CD titled, Physical Ed by The Learning Station. While listening to the song, the children will form a circle, and the child in the middle will be the one who gets to choose the motion that the rest of the children have to imitate. This is a great movement activity, allows children to practice taking and turns, and it is a lot of fun. To end the storytime, the children can look at a variety of fiction and nonfiction books on display about monkeys and other animals that George saw at the zoo and check them out if they please. All sites used are cited on each resource and suggestions for activities are included in the "insight" section of Scoop.it!Suggested Titles for display:Five Little Monkeys Series by Eileen Christelow, Curious George Series by H.A. Denise Durante's insight:

This "Feed the Monkey" game can be used for another motor activity. I would use it if there was extra time after the songs, dances and readings.

Denise Durante's insight:

Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow is a silly story about monkeys who get into lots of trouble once they go to bed. It's a fun book to go along with the rhyme and song. I chose the big book version so that everyone can see it during the story time. There are other books in this series including one titled, "Five Little Monkey Reading in Bed."
