I could so relate to the story the author tells at the beginning of the article.  I too have been so caught up in a person's story that I have been lost in thought for hours after thinking about what I would've done in the same situation.  And those are the stories that remain with me many, many years later.

Sarah McElrath's curator insight, April 10, 2013 8:48 AM

Great stuff for all--teachers, students, everyone. How much more tolerance would there be in the world if we shared our stories in an effective way?

5 Brands Taking Digital Storytelling To The Next Level | Ignite Social Media [bookmarking - July 2012] | Best Storytelling Picks | Scoop.it

Brand storytelling is hardly a new idea. One of the earliest examples is the Wishbook from Sears and Roebuck. In 1895, the Sears Wishbook hit rural Americans mailboxes offering a new concept – a variety store that allowed frontier families to order everything from guns and garments to a Stradivarius violin – for $6.10!

Canon’s Project Imagin8ion with Ron Howard

...Last year, Canon charged legendary film director Ron Howard to create a short film based on photos submitted by Canon users. The goal was to build a story from eight photos chosen for setting, time, character, mood, relationship, goal, obstacle, and the unknown. The result is a moody and moving short film that explores dealing with the death of a parent from childhood to adulthood....

Alex Balfour tells the new media story of the London 2012 Games (Wired UK)

Alex Balfour tells the new media story of the London 2012 Games (Wired UK) | Best Storytelling Picks | Scoop.it

"Alex Balfour began his talk at The Story with a tear inducing recap reel of the London 2012 Games. The former head of new media for the Games was here to tell the story of one of the most "successful" Olympics ever held -- the slow motion montage of finishing line celebrations and flag waving crowds drove the point home, that the Games had connected with people.

July 2005 was where things began, when Sebastian Coe told the world of the vision for the London 2012 games while speaking in Singapore: "To use the power of the Games to inspire change" -- this was the driving vision that Balfour's new media team were to drive toward.

"These visions can be slightly portentous," said Balfour. It was an ambitious project -- the heady undertaking of changing attitudes toward disability was only one aspect of a vast list of objectives and aims.

The way that Balfour and his team went about attempting to achieve these aims was in telling the story of this vision, unpacking a narrative with a clear and simple communications strategy. They needed to tell the story of the Games -- that they were "doing it right", that everything was working and going as it should be, from construction to transport infrastructures; telling stories that would sit around key themes of the Games, be that an athlete or a team. The story would also require the team to engage in the "trench warfare"..."

Effective storytelling for business

Effective storytelling for business | Best Storytelling Picks | Scoop.it

As content takes its rightful place at the forefront of marketing, I'm seeing many marketers fail at basic storytelling.

Marketers are ineffective when they use the classic "customer testimonial" format and pop that onto their blog or make it into a video. "Here’s our product. It is great. Here are customers who say it is great. Now buy some of our product." This just doesn't hold people's attention.

How interesting would a book or movie be were it to have this plot?:
Boy meets girl.
They fall in love.
They get married.

That's what most people do with their business writing.

Effective storytelling

The best stories drip with conflict. They have a hero and sometimes a villain. There is a story arc. As a writing teacher once told me: "Writing without conflict is propaganda."

All business have conflict: lack of sales, poor service, employee malaise...

The issue is often that management doesn't want to talk about the negative but you have to have a hellish situation in order to make a story compelling.
