This Sunday is the anniversary of Martin Luther King's historic "I have a dream" speech, delivered during the March On Washington, Aug. 28, 1963.

Here's the back story of how the speech was crafted. It's full of drama and cliff-hangers. I love the speech, and learned a lot about how it came to be.

For the full speech, view the PDF from the government archives.

What's your dream? -- and story on!

My colleague, Karthik Rajan @KarthRajan wrote this piece about being more effective at sales. I really like the questions he uses that get at the heart of sales issues.

Then I really like the analogy he uses to make his point about being yourself. And in the midst of all of this is the critical role of storytelling.

If you struggle with sales, or just want to get better at it using stories, this post will help.

Story on and make that sale!

When it comes to business storytelling articles, I have been very impressed with those that are being put out by Visme.   This article, for instance, surprised me with a number of visual storytelling trends that are accelerating.  Although predictive, the author, Nayomi Chibana, makes a great deal of sense.  Furthemore, what she says is worth knowing across a broad spectrum of businesses.

It includes great quotes too, like this one excerpted from something George Dyson said a few years ago.

We now live a world where information is potentially unlimited.

Information is cheap, but meaning is expensive."

Again, however, this, like so many articles on storytelling, sets off my pet peeve meter with unsubstantiated statistics.  In this case, she states that the human mind processes visual information 60,00 times faster than text and 83% of human learning is visual.

Besides not being substantiated, I can hardly believe that 83% of human learning is visual.  Furthermore, when audio and visual are used at the same time, which stimulus gets the nod?

  1. How to resist the dark side of empathy
  2. The difference between good storytelling and great storytelling
  3. How marketers tap into well-worn paths in our brains

...to  name just a few topics.

Enjoy digging into this one. I'm looking forward to listening to it myself when I'm traveling home on the plane :)

This American Life storyteller Ira Glass rocks, and here's a quick video with storytelling advice we rarely hear.

Sure, people have great enthusiasm to become great storytellers in their business, or as a leader, or to change the world. Yet becoming a great storyteller requires practice -- i.e. telling stories a lot.

Most people start practicing and then stop, never achieving their dreams. Why? Because of what Glass talks about in this quick video.

Watch this piece, pay attention, and don't stop practicing when you  hit this road bump.

Story on!

Karen Dietz's curator insight, August 31, 2015 12:00 PM

Here's some handy new research reported in Harvard Business Review that points out how important social skills are to your personal bottom line. And storytelling skills are front and center because it's your highest leverage point in building relationships, rapport, trust, credibility, believability, and meaningful interactions.

Storytelling builds skills in deep listening, improvisation, design, focus, empathy, influence, impact, and the like. It's a gateway to creativity, innovation, and flow states that generate higher productivity and greater well-being.

What I like about the report is that the research documents how much social skills will affect your ability to generate more income. This income generation is not about transactional storytelling (tell me a story and I'll buy your product), but about relational storytelling (sharing stories for connection and the ability to get work done through people).

I'm chalking this research up to another example of storytelling ROI. This is a good read which I'm sure you'll enjoy. Now get working on your storytelling skills!

What a provocative piece! Yes, there's a backlash against storytelling going on. Basically, that storytelling is bad and we should avoid it. Makes me laugh.

Since we think in stories, talk in stories, and stories are the way we make meaning of the world, It's like people saying "Don't have a brain!" How silly.

So this article charts out the 9 arguments against storytelling, and offers clear, concise, brilliant rebuttals. Yay! Take these to your clients/colleagues whenever you hear one of these pop out of their mouths.

Written by Ron Ploof, as you read these arguments you will scoff and then enjoy Ron's reply. Above all, keep those stories coming! Be brave. Story is worth fighting for.

One of my favourite story pieces of the week. What I like about this is that Ikea actually makes the customer the story. Too often we forget to involve our customers in our storytelling and it is so powerful when we do. If we can see ourselves in the story, we are more likely to engage and buy. For brands like IKEA, the customer really is the story. In the literal sense too as we have to put the darn stuff together! ;)

Curated by Jim Signorelli, the newest addition to the Just Story It Curation Team! Here's his insight:

...And nail it, he does! There are many points to ponder in this article, including a very insightful definition of the corporate narrative:

"The story that embodies the essence of your business in action, comprised of more than just products and services, and even more than your mission statement.  It's what your company stands for, and how it's making the world a better place. It's a story that comprises your strengths AND your weaknesses."

I also enjoyed his prescription for preventing FUD (full unwanted disclosure) and the dangers it can present in a world where brands are now more transparent than ever.

A five-star article for sure!

It’s no longer enough to share the same message on multiple channels. Care needs to be taken to not only take advantage of the value proposition of each platform—e.g., print, video, TV, social—but to be sure all the messages are complimentary and add up to a satisfying whole.
