#Daring2Share Chat (with tweets) · lifeboat_hiv

This is a summary of our #Daring2Share Twitter Chat about 'fair storytelling'.
The Lifeboat Project's insight:

Lifeboat: HIV - Daring to Share is a participative web-documentary where five families living in Europe today tell their stories of living with HIV. This is where you can find the project: lifeboatfilms.org/

Today Manuela Maiguashca, one of the three filmmakers in the Lifeboat team, hosted our first live Twitter Chat #Daring2Share talking about the ethics of telling other people's stories. We were lucky to have with us Mirjam Schulpen who is a participant in our project and the amazing blogger Mark S. King ( myfabulousdisease.com/ ) We asked six questions and got some pretty amazing and honest answers. This is the conversation as it happened:

Great little film in which four terminally ill people talk about the fact that real stories of death are still taboo in our society. Is it fair to leave these stories out? Is your story less important because you are at the end of your life? Can't we learn from each other, especially as we journey through the end of life? Shouldn't everyone be listening?

The Lifeboat Project's insight:

Emotive Storytelling, the Heart and Science of Persuasion aim to "rediscover of the ancient wisdom of storytelling and combine it with advances in neuroscience, virtual agents, and digital media. The use of narrative to influence health behavior is being rediscovered, and research has increasingly supported this strategy. Today, these seminal forces and technologies are combining to drive user engagement, adherence and behavior change in healthcare, marketing, education and business."

A wonderful speech in which DasGupta talks about our "cultural crisis of hearing" - we hear only the stories we've been conditioned to hear. Technology and information multi-tasking dominate our time. Listening is a skill we need to re-learn. Only then can we tell stories that matter.
