Video storytelling: conflict is a must have in biz stories

Video storytelling: conflict is a must have in biz stories | Storytelling for biz & life | Scoop.it
Why do so many videos made by companies fall flat? In many cases, it's because they lack the essential component of storytelling - conflict.

Always remember the storytelling elements, no matter who you are working with.

Kim Zinke (aka Gimli Goose)'s curator insight, February 26, 12:39 AM

This article made so much sense to me that I had to sit down and listen to the podcast right away.  Here's some comments that stood out for me:

  • Brands are struggling.  What's missing is conflict.

  • Need to inject conflict without damaging the brand.

  • Too many provide a false picture – everything is wonderful.

  • Have to (provide and) overcome the conflict or the listener won’t like it.

  • Conflict – get as close as possible to death.

  • Conflict – best kind of universal truth.

How to find your org/brands conflict?  Need to take a softer look at the notion of conflict (the term conflict brings up certain imagery, feelings).  Conflict is simply something to overcome.  Ask yourself - do we want to be a company who wants to overcome things?

There's also a great made-up example (Donut Corp) provided of how an organization could find it's conflict.

Miriam Gilbert's insight:

A very attractive summary of WHY you should give great presentations, and HOW to create a compelling one. It is fairly high level and gives little detail on the how to design, how to create compelling stories or how to actually present - but all this forgiven because it is BEAUTITUFL. In seriousness; the point this presentation makes more clearly than anything else is that effective presentations are great tools for influecing - and that works best if you add your personality into the mix. And this deck certainly has a lot of personality in addition to good content.

Emaze - create amazing presentations

Emaze - create amazing presentations | Storytelling for biz & life | Scoop.it

Emaze vision – to change the way people create presentations through a simple, fully automated process that generate powerful and engaging showcases.

Via Baiba Svenca
Miriam Gilbert's insight:

Lovely new arrivale on the presentation circuit. Creating compelling presentations has become a mainstay in any business - if you want to convince, engage, influence or simply inform (although, I am believe you aim is still one of the before mentioned), you are likely to have to make some form of presentation. Now the days where that meant powerpoint or keynote as only options are over - and even newcomers like sliderocket etc have to watch their back. Emaze follows the approach by Haiku for ipad, which limits the design options you have - to ensure your slides have a cohesive look and feel. Great tool for creating a quick presentation - currently still in beta but the templates are promising. Watch out for our own efforts using emaze - coming soon to a theatre near you!

In-image storytelling with ThingLink

Miriam Gilbert's insight:

A picture is worth a thousand words. And now it can contain them, too!

Thinklink allows

ThingLink‚Äôs proprietary, patent-pending web-based solution allows publishers to create, tag and share any image, in any environment, quickly and easily. ThingLink allows content producers to better understand how their images are being used by consumers on the different social media platforms, both in terms of interactions with the image as well as a wide range of social behaviors.

A great addition to story telling, Thinglink has great potential for the class-room, news articles, magazines and collaborative story development. For example, try including a Thinglink image in your presentation as you explore various points of your message. See their website for more information: http://www.thinglink.com/learn

Karen Dietz's curator insight, February 13, 11:50 AM

Ooh ooh ooh -- this article is really cool! Add this to your arsenal about why oral or in-person storytelling is a higher leverage point than just audio stories.

This article makes the point that reading a story creates more engagement with it because more of the brain and body is engaged. We already know that oral storytelling is a whole brain/whole body experience that often trumps reading. The research shared here has important ramifications for anyone producing content.

The researchers demonstrate that people who listen to stories (like podcasts or books on tape) are more easily distracted. That means your ability to connect, engage, and shift perceptions is compromised. And compromised a lot, according to this research.

Enjoy digging into this research and learning more about how to better leverage the power of storytelling.
