'It is time to take storytelling seriously'

'It is time to take storytelling seriously' | Story Route | Scoop.it

I am absolutely fascinated by the mechanics of storytelling. I admitted as much at news:rewired last year when I was invited to talk about new forms of storytelling in journalism. But in exploring some of these brilliant new platforms – Twitter, Storyful, Storify, even online video – we forget that storytelling itself is not a new thing. It is, of course, ancient.

In a mere five minutes, Ken Burns: On Story conveys just enough of importance about Burns’ personality, working principles, and worldview that it may leave you feeling like you have no choice but to dive into his filmography immediately.

Of course, this all depends on how you feel about storytelling. In explaining his own view on filmmaking, Burns rolls out that old quote from Jean Luc-Godard, “Cinema is truth at twenty-four frames a second.”

The War Between Data and Storytelling

The War Between Data and Storytelling | Story Route | Scoop.it
Liberals like data, conservatives like stories, and never the twain shall meet?

But for some reason, what really struck me today was the way the both Brooks and Krugman play to type. Krugman the liberal is all about the data: he hauls out charts, models, "signatures," and international comparisons. Brooks, by contrast, barely admits that data even bears on this question.
