Does "Your Story" Ring True?

Does "Your Story" Ring True? | Story Route | Scoop.it

Truth in advertising. It’s a simple concept yet so many have, perhaps conveniently, forgotten how dishonesty can ruin careers. We have the politician who exaggerated his service in Vietnam, the renown chef who lied on his resume about where and for whom he cooked, the CEO who, well, didn’t actually ‘graduate’ from Harvard, and the Olympic athlete who, for years, denied taking steroids. Plus, there are countless people who lied about getting Medals of Honor in Vietnam. You’ve heard the responses, “Oops.” “Sorry.” “I misspoke.” And you’ve heard their consequences as they were humiliated, fired, jailed and/or forced to take early retirements.

How a physician and nurse merge healing, storytelling

Every year, we teach new medical students how to take a medical history. An adequate medical history succinctly summarizes the facts of the case — the chronology of how a particular episode of disease evolved. A good medical history tells how the illness affected the individual patient, and an extraordinary one almost brings the patient to life in front of the reader.

Why Our Stories Matter

Why Our Stories Matter | Story Route | Scoop.it

In Part I: An Invitation to Narrative, there is a fantastic little section written by Jacqui Banaszynski, a Knight Chair Professor at the Missouri School of Journalism, that I may just have to print out and hang up on my bulletin board. She writes:

They say language makes us human. That notion is being challenged as we discover that apes have language. Whales have language. I welcome them into our fold. I’m not threatened by them, quite frankly, because I think that stories make us human. Only by telling them do we stay so.

Stories are our prayers. Write and edit them with due reverence, even when the stories themselves are irreverent.

Stories are parables. Write and edit and tell yours with meaning, so each tale stands in for a larger message, each story a guidepost on our collective journey.

Stories are history. Write and edit and tell yours with accuracy and understanding and context and with unwavering devotion to the truth.

Stories are music. Write and edit and tell yours with pace and rhythm and flow. Throw in the dips and twirls that make them exciting but stay true to the core beat. Readers hear stories with their inner ear.

Stories are our soul. Write and edit and tell yours with your whole selves. Tell them as if they are all that matters. It matters that you do it as if that’s all there is.

Who’s Editing Your Life Story?

Who’s Editing Your Life Story? | Story Route | Scoop.it

... writing our life-stories with passion and abandon can feel electric. Telling a good story with our lives—one written in flesh and blood on the paper of time—is giddiness and joy. But revising the story of our lives is especially difficult work.

Magic and Storytelling — A Kinect-enhanced augmented reality performance | Kinect Hacks

Magic and Storytelling is an interactive presentation about the history of storytelling augmented with virtual magic in real-time. It was produced and created by New York based cyber illusionist Marco Tempest in collaboration with onformative and checksum5. When Marco asked us to work on the art direction for Magic and Storytelling we were fascinated by the challenge of combining not only several new technologies, but also giving the whole presentation a homogenous and magical look. In order to achieve this we developed a variety of different particle systems.

Escaping the Troll

Escaping the Troll | Story Route | Scoop.it

Storytelling is not just kid stuff. We, the storytelling community, know this. Indeed, we know that “kid stuff” can be….and should be…meaningful at its core. Life long learning begins with those bedside stories of survival, of compassion, of what life holds, offers, and teaches. And for those whose stories takes some bad turns, stories and storytelling can help them find our way out of the woods and home.

When stories find us

When stories find us | Story Route | Scoop.it

I am at the National Storytelling Conference, a wonderful annual gathering of tellers from all walks of life and all range of experience. It's a great opportunity to hear stories, hone skills and meet new friends.

Truth to tell, I didn't really want to come. I've been very busy and was yearning for a quiet weekend at home. I knew once I got here I'd be glad, but wow, was I grumpy. And when you set out on a journey with that kind of attitude, you are guaranteed a different journey than the one you expect.

On Friday I packed my suitcase and called the cab, thinking if nothing else I'd have a chance to get some writing or reading done on the way.

You know what's coming.
