AP Interactive visualizes a future of stories that reach beyond text

AP Interactive visualizes a future of stories that reach beyond text | Story and Narrative | Scoop.it
When most people think of the AP, they think of the global army of correspondents reporting stories that appear in papers and websites. More and more, though, the AP brand is also coming to represent interactive features that convey the news. And though the Interactive department has undergone a dramatic shift in recent years to be able to produce interactive graphics, it’s still providing the qualities newspapers have relied on the AP for for years, Nessa noted: speed, accuracy, and a vast network of resources.

Is This The Greatest About Us Page Ever Written?

Is This The Greatest About Us Page Ever Written? | Story and Narrative | Scoop.it
Those stories don’t have to be solely contained on your blog, or your YouTube videos, or other common vessels for swashbuckling corporate tales.

Even the humble and oft-maligned About Us page can be a scintillating source of content and brand-building, if you free yourself from the boring, factual archetype.

Like these guys did…..The Royal Plantation Resort in Ocho Rios, Jamaica created the best About Us page I’ve ever read. It’s closer to a Jackie Collins novel than a fact sheet.

Steve Jobs and the Power of Storytelling - Social Media Explorer | Story and Narrative | Scoop.it
Quick, think of a good story you’ve heard in the last few months, or even years – any story (short story, childhood bedtime story, a narrative joke, story in a presentation, etc). Now think of a couple of good statistics you’ve heard in the last few weeks.

Which one came easiest?

Urban Storytelling: Hitotoki

Urban Storytelling: Hitotoki | Story and Narrative | Scoop.it
We’ve always been fascinated by cities — they are living organisms whose narrative is constantly evolving. Which is why we love Hitotoki — a rather unorthodox exploration of the highly subjective cultural footprints of cities, creating a narrative map of the world.

Transmedia Storytelling: Neuroscience Meets Ancient Practices | Psychology Today

Transmedia Storytelling: Neuroscience Meets Ancient Practices | Psychology Today | Story and Narrative | Scoop.it
Transmedia storytelling is quickly becoming the new standard for 21st century communication. Transmedia storytelling uses the tools of the storyteller-emotion, engagement, universal themes, personal connection, and relevance-to create a communication experience instead of a message. Get over thinking it is only about entertainment franchises. Transmedia storytelling moves a brand from slogan to interaction between the company and the customer. It unites executives and teams with focused goals and a common purpose.

The Power of Storytelling

The Power of Storytelling | Story and Narrative | Scoop.it
It wasn’t long before I stumbled upon a video posted by TMB on YouTube. A bank commercial that had inspired over a million views in just over a month? And it’s not even Super Bowl season? Hard to believe.

Only a few seconds into the video, it became abundantly clear that it wasn’t a bank commercial at all.

So what was it?

The power of storytelling.

Putting a Face to a Name: How Story Communicates

Putting a Face to a Name: How Story Communicates | Story and Narrative | Scoop.it
This is the age of the story, we’re often told, and the most effective designers are also good storytellers. If the keynotes and coffee breaks at creative conferences are any indication, we’re now telling convincing stories not just to our clients and users, but to each other. There’s a strong incentive to do this: if we didn’t, none of our ideas would go anywhere.

Unfortunately there’s still one area where we tend to tell very weak stories, and that’s when describing our own process. The narrative of how a design challenge leads to a concept and then a solution is for some reason maddeningly difficult to explain to anyone outside of our own discipline.

8 great examples of nonprofit storytelling

8 great examples of nonprofit storytelling | Story and Narrative | Scoop.it
As regular readers know, I’ve been a longtime proponent of visual storytelling to advance the missions of nonprofits, cause organizations and businesses. (Heck, I co-founded Ourmedia.org before there was a YouTube.) People take action on behalf of a cause only when they feel an emotional connection, and yet nonprofits in particular are famously bad at telling their own stories.

Gore, Ex-Apple Engineers Team Up to Blow Up the Book

Gore, Ex-Apple Engineers Team Up to Blow Up the Book | Story and Narrative | Scoop.it
What do you do after working for Apple, a company whose mission seems to be nothing less than disrupting entire industries? Easy. You start a company to create your own ding in the universe.

That’s the idea behind Push Pop Press, a digital creation tool designed to blow up the concept of the book. Frictionless self-publishing is a fertile new space, but this particular startup got a little help from former vice president Al Gore, whose exacting demands on an app version of his book Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis gave this would-be company its first real boost.

The Five Keys to Telling An Engaging Story, from Quentin Tarantino | Business 2 Community | Story and Narrative | Scoop.it
Like just about all of Tarantino’s films, the movie is divided into chapters. While I was focusing on the movie, I was also once again enchanted by the tools Tarantino uses to engage his audience with his storytelling. There are five keys that I’ve noticed in Tarantino’s method of storytelling, and I think all five could unlock the power of engaging storytelling for your blog and all of your marketing materials.
