How To Tell A Story -- Story Wars 10 Simple Strategies

I'm curating this because I like it and I don't like it -- and it is worth taking a look at the assumptions going on in this piece so we can get really smart.

 

This piece was put together by Jonathan Sachs, author of Winning The Story Wars. Sachs comes from the world of marketing and branding and this is reflected in his point of view.

 

Let's get what I don't like out of the way so I can chat about what I do like. Here is what puts my teeth on edge:


1. Sachs states that "we live in a world that has lost its connection to traditional myths and we are now trying to find new ones..." Welllllllll, if your slice of reality is the Hollywood, advertising, and branding world it is easy to get sucked into this notion. But we know from Jung, other psychologists, Folklorists, Anthroplogists, and neuroscience how this is not true. There is great irony in this "myth" that Sachs is perpetuating.

 

2. We are engaged in a war. Hmmmmm. Well, for millenium people have wanted to gain the attention of other people -- so nothing new there. Is this a war?  Could be. But if we are wanting to employ the power of storytelling to find solutions and create change as Sachs advocates, then war does not speak to the greater good but instead speaks to winners and losers where ongoing resentment is inherently built in. That sounds like the perpetuation of war -- same old same old. 

 

3. Sach's relationship to storytelling is still at the transactional level -- I'll tell you a story and you'll do what I want. While what he really wants it seems is storytelling at the transformational level. That requires a different mind-set and different story skills -- deep listening, engagement, story sharing, etc. And he completely ignores the relational level of storytelling.

 

4. Reliance on the Hero's Journey as the only story archetype to follow. Well, that's a narrow slice of reality and one geared towards youth. Yet other story archetypes are desperately needed: King/Queen, Trickster, Magician for example in order to affect change.

 

5. As a result, his 10 simple strategies stay at the transactional level with a few geared towards transformation (figure out what you stand for, declare your moral, reveal the moral). Now any great professional storyteller will tell you these that I've mentioned are essential for any compelling storytelling session. So they land in both worlds of transactional and transformational storytelling.

 

OK -- on to what I do like!

 

If you want to be heard, you'd better learn to tell better stories. The solutions to our significant problems these days depends on our ability to tell great stories and inspire people to think differently. Storytelling does not take long to learn, but it does take a lifetime to master, Know what a story is and is not Our abilitiy to disseminate stories is greater now than in the past -- because of technology. That is just a reminder to expend your use of different channels in sharing your stories that are now available to us.

Well, Karen! You made my day offering this terrific new Scoop. I'm enriched by the way you think, Karen. Especially about story... I guess we get really "bent" in a certain way by anthropological training and it's still pretty rare to find others who are looking through the kinds of filters you and I have installed in Mind. De-light-ful learning with and from you!

I'm behind the curve on this one, being new to scoop it - but as a teacher/artist I have to agree with your observation that delving into other archetypes would present rich opportunities to "language" storytelling in lots of environments. I use archetypes to get at the fears and struggles artists face in my workshops - and they aren't all about the hero's path! The Damsel in Distress is one that comes to mind...

I agree Jane. Archetypes can be so helpful in many ways. One of the ones I love for artists is the Trickster archetype, and the Magician. LOL on the 'damsel in distress'! Time to go put my 'big girl' panties on and deal with the next challenge :)

The Silent History could finally change how we read e-books on our iOS devices.

 

Much has been written about the steady decline of traditional books as e-readers and tablets have gained in popularity. This movement, however, really hasn’t changed the overall reading experience that remains much the same as it has for centuries. Even on our iPad, we still advance through a story one page after another, front to back.

The Silent History represents a much different type of storytelling, and one that effectively makes use of many of the features of iOS devices, including portability and GPS. The story itself is also quite good. The result is a presentation that is transformative, interactive, and at times, creepy. And one that, if proven successful, could change how future e-books are designed.

 

The Story

 

Set in 2044, the fictional Silent History looks back at 32 years of research on a strange phenomenon that leaves children speechless from the moment of birth. It is told through the use of “testimonials” written and collected since 2011 from those closest to the disease or most affected, including parents, doctors, teachers, and the occasional cult leader.

 

These testimonials each serve a vital, yet at times, different purpose. They may be a character portrait, short story, or just one part of a larger plot. Together, these 1,000-2,000 word narratives promise to tell a complete story. And yet, in another way, these individual stories only scratch the surface....

These days, we hear a lot about the fact that content marketers need to be storytellers. Here are tips on how to create powerful content marketing stories.

 

I've curated this great video before from Chipotle, but it deserves another look. Not only did the company win awards and 7 million views for the video, they also took it a step further and told the story behind making the video. Good for them! Back stories are very powerful. And I really like how the author Manya Chylinski talks about the functions stories serve, and how biz or branding stories can have many of these same functions, but with a twist. The author's tips are solid -- but nothing really new. So go watch the video again for a refresher example on effective brand storytelling and the other video as a back-story example!

We continue our month of Transmedia Storytelling interviews with Steve Peters, founding partner of No Mimes Media. As a pioneering force in Alternate Reality Games and Transmedia Entertainment, he has worked on some of the biggest and most successful interactive experiences to date, including campaigns for Watchman, The Dark Knight, Microsoft, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matrix and Nine Inch Nails. His Why So Serious campaign for The Dark Knight and Year Zero campaign for Nine Inch Nails both won the Grand Prix Award at the Cannes Cyber Lions ceremony. Steve talked to us candidly about the Transmedia vs ARG debate, and the three biggest challenges facing interactive storytelling.

 

As a pioneer of both ARG and Transmedia Entertainment you have a hard-earned and unique perspective. In the past, you have been at the center of controversy around the use of the term Transmedia. How do you define Transmedia and Alternative Reality Games and how do you compare and contrast them?

 

This is a great, if not contentious question! There are a lot of definitions being bandied about, but here’s what I operate under in my own head: A transmedia story is a single story that is told simultaneously across multiple platforms using current digital technologies. To me, the key parts of that definition (and the parts that make what I do unique) are the single-story part and the simultaneous part. Things all happen together in sync to tell the same story. The stuff I’ve been working on with Fourth Wall Studios at Rides.tv illustrates this exactly. What’s more, these stories are single-player, re-playable and shareable.

 

As for Alternate Reality Games such as the one I designed for the film The Dark Knight (Why So Serious), I consider them a unique subset of transmedia storytelling. How they differ from something like Rides is that they typically take place in real time over a period of weeks or months and are played by a community. ARGs are more like music festivals, while Rides are like MP3 albums, if that makes sense. Once an ARG is over, you can’t play it again, which I think is a huge limitation.....

Because of my 10-years of involvement with Storytelling, I have had great opportunities to learn more about the engaging concepts of story, how to construct them, and how to deliver them.

 

I have also shared this passion with my wife who is the Program Administrator at the International Storytelling Center. We all tell stories. We tell stories in our personal lives and we tell them in our professional lives.

 

In thinking of this, a big question began to stick in my mind.

 

It was this:

Yes, it's true, I've had story structure on the brain. I've also recently joined pinterest (of which I immediately became addicted). But there's a happy side effect of these two obsessions… this post!

 

Holy Cow! Here's a blog post with 10 different diagrams on story structure! I doubt you will ever need another story structure diagram after looking at these.

 

Some are similar. Some have their own unique twist. And then there's the 17 stages of Joseph Campbell's Monomyth to explore. Yikes -- that's a big one!

 

Of course, the simplest story structure is: problem -- resolution. Add to that a set-up/context in the beginning and a meaningful close at the end, and you are done.

 

Hah -- would that storytelling could be so simple! As every professional storyteller will tell you, a powerful story is all in the delivery. Still, if you don't follow the structures in these diagrams, you will simply end up with a plot-based description: "I went to the store. I bought some bread. I came home." No story there! I doubt you would pay money for that one.

 

Soooo -- check out these diagrams, use them to craft your stories, and you are half-way there. Then go work on your delivery :)
