Brand Storytelling is Just a Fancier Way of Lying, Right?

Well, we’ve just gone through a strange patch where a couple of prominent athletes, Lance Armstrong and Manti Te’o, admitted telling some big lies.

Wait, they weren’t lies. They were “stories,” right? Stories that enhanced their “personal brand”?

Marketers and advertisers today are obsessed with the idea of “storytelling.” So is there a difference between storytelling and lying? Does the ad campaign you’re working on tell a story, a lie, or both?

Some good points on transmedia and journalism, with a couple of interesting links.

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, February 8, 2013 5:06 PM

Journalism is telling stories.  Transmedia is the way the human brain works -- creating meaning from multiple sources.  Intentionally combining the two creates a more immersive experience of news.  Perhaps more likely to increase empathy for what others go through.

Far from some sophisticated approaches and consulting-led organizational storytelling, this condensed article shows how stories work in business. Based on the great book from Annette Simmons ("The Story Factor") it teaches some stories every leader must be able to tell.

Thomas Wooldridge's comment, April 11, 2013 11:54 AM
I love this story approach because it is so much effective than having a one way communication sales pitch. I wrote about his in my blog as well http://thomaswooldridge.com/blog-2/business-story-telling-promoting-your-business-in-an-interesting-way/

Storytelling through (almost) just photography

PetaPixel on the Paul Harvey Super Bowl “Farmer” ad:

One of standout commercials during the Super Bowl yesterday was the above ad by Chrysler promoting its Dodge Ram line of trucks. The 2-minute ad pays tribute to farmers across the nation, and is composed entirely of photographs showing various facets of the farming industry.

Note that the images aren’t entirely static. Watch for bits of parallax, clouds that stream by, particles that float, and more. I love that kind of subtle enlivening, creating something in the cinemagram vein (not quite a photo, not exactly video).

NEIL GAIMAN'S COLLABORATIVE STORY PROJECT

"I've been trying to figure out for years a way to collaborate with readers," says fantasy writer Neil Gaiman, of "Coraline" fame, in the video above. Now he's got his wish, thanks to a new project he's doing with BlackBerry, called "A Calendar of Tales," in which readers can text in ideas and illustrations for a series of stories that he'll write.
