What another great post from Rohit Bhargava.

You've gathered your stories, spent time crafting them, practiced them time and again, and then when you tell it to a customer or prospect, you bomb.

Arrggghhh!! How frustrating! So what's a biz storyteller to do? Read Bhargava's post and his 'Do Not Do This' list!

I chuckled when I read the 2 pieces of advice he finds people usually receive:

  1. Tell more stories.
  2. Use bigger fonts.

LOL -- neither one of these will work!

Find out where you are making your mistakes -- and go fix them. Thanks Rohit for putting this insightful article together!

Win More Competitive Deals with Exceptional Storytelling

Win More Competitive Deals with Exceptional Storytelling | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

"There have been many sales methodologies focused on uncovering needs.  They will tell you to match your solution to those customer needs.  This is only part of a successful strategy.

To win a deal, you need to appeal to two different minds.

Emotional Mind – what feels right?  What reduces my risk and neutralizes my fear?  Does the solution strengthen my personal agenda?  Ever been faced with two solutions that seemed pretty much equal, but went with your gut?  That’s the emotional mind.  The emotional mind is the quick, lizard brain.  It gives us our sense of fulfillment, and temporarily calms our fears and concerns.  It must be appeased to win the sale.Logical Mind - Why should I choose this solution over that one?  When will I realize my return on investment?"

How to Craft B2B Stories That Someone Will Read

How to Craft B2B Stories That Someone Will Read | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

Several years ago, a client said to me, “I want you to develop stories so compelling that everyone of our sales people and customers will want to consume them.”

I enthusiastically said, with total confidence, “We can do that!” but it turned out to be much harder than I thought. Despite producing stories that were well received, I learned that no single story – or any piece of content marketing – works across the board, even for a select group of 400 sales people – let alone a market segment of 10,000 potential customers.

In business writing and literature, no one crafts stories that connect with everyone. Not me, you, Daniel Pink, Tom Peters, or even JK Rowling. And that’s okay!

The stories you tell probably won't appeal to everyone and that's okay! Craft your stories with your intended audience in mind and you're more likely to connect with them and engage them. If you write a story that tries to appeal to everyone, your story will probably not appeal to anyone.

The Best Story Always Wins: Prioritizing Storytelling to Generate Leads, Sales, And Lots Of Love

Society has seen enough whitepapers, long business plans, high-degree Linkedin pages and MBA students. There's a better way to get people interested in you: tell your story and not your profession. Spend your life crafting it. The story has to be the original, authentic you, because everyone’s story is different. A monotonous or invaluable story will be lost in the abyss of "never told."

Together, we'd like to share with you four actionable steps you can take to craft your best story.

Many brands today are still figuring out how to tell their story, show the human side of the brand, and connect with their audience on a deeper level than just their products and services. If that isn’t hard enough, there are a myriad of avenues by which to do so...should your brand use Facebook, a blog, YouTube,  Pinterest, none, or all of the above?

Must Catch: Immersive theatre company reinterprets Kafka's The Trial for digital age (Wired UK)

Must Catch: Immersive theatre company reinterprets Kafka's The Trial for digital age (Wired UK) | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it
An immersive theatre company called Retz has reinterpreted two of Franz Kafka's works -- The Trial and In The Penal Colony -- for the internet age in an interactive performance that sees audience members travel around East London.

The production is a large-scale interactive story where audience members follow protagonist Joseph K through a series of locations in East London (including Shoreditch Town Hall and the Rose Lipman building) as he comes to terms with his mysterious arrest. Audience members experience the story in a series of one-on-one encounters with some of the 47 cast members and find themselves lured into helping Joseph K. What they say to the actors will be noted, disseminated via the web, and potentially used against them by other cast members at a later moment.

Retz founder Felix Mortimer told Wired.co.uk: "The actors and stage manager all use Twitter accounts set to private to quickly communicate pictures and information about audience members to each other and subtly thread it into performance. I suppose it's a database on the fly and a good way to tag and keep track of our audience members and quickly make them feel like they are bleeding digital information -- which is the main thrust of the piece." The team also uses Twilio for making phone calls during the performance..."

The Power of Storytelling, by Christopher Rosche

The Power of Storytelling, by Christopher Rosche | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

"I’ve seen this effect up close and personal dozens of times, especially in my early years as a consultant. Companies hired us to find creative solutions to challenging problems. After months of study, we would build massive PowerPoint presentations filled with bullets, facts, and numbers to present a way out. But for more times than I care to remember, the cold hard facts did not always motivate our clients to change.

Beginning around 2004, we found a much more effective approach. We still conducted interviews, research, and formulated solutions that made sense. The method of analysis remained largely the same.

What did change was the way we presented the solutions. When we told our clients a well-designed story that illustrated the correct set of solutions,  there was an incredibly marked difference in the reception. As we developed this narrative or story-based approach, we saw employees, corporate executives, and military leaders far more receptive and motivated to take on tough changes to their old behaviors."
