The Hazards Of Tweeting While Watching TV

The Hazards Of Tweeting While Watching TV | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

Twitter is hailed as a measure of TV engagement, but scientists say tweeters are paying less attention....

...Viewers who tweet and watch at the same time, in other words, have less attention to pay to either activity.

Dr. Jordan Grafman, Chief of the Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, concured. "Even if you're doing two things at once, you're sort of doing one, then the other, then one, then the other, in a short time frame," he explained. "It's true we can do these things, we have the capability, but it costs us in deeper thinking...."

Thisi is kinda funny - what deep thinking am I doing when watching TV? If I tweet, I will likely miss stuff, rewind and/or repeat view.. The dynamics are really interesting though in terms of wanting to stay synced between Twitter & TV. Falling seconds behind the Twitter present can be disaster as Tweets become spoilers rather than euphoric group confirmation of a shared experience

Mattia Nicoletti's curator insight, March 27, 2013 3:22 AM

Scientists are studying tweeting during traditional tv contents. I agree if they say we pay less attention when we tweet and watch but I believe it depends on what we are watching. Tweeting when we watch it is more an experience than just engagement.

Why data without a soul is meaningless

Why data without a soul is meaningless | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it
As we move towards a quantified society, one shaped by data, we start to dismiss things that are unquantified. Empathy, emotion and storytelling — these are as much a part of business as they are of life.

A Data Scientist's Real Job: Storytelling

A Data Scientist's Real Job: Storytelling | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it
Crunching numbers is only half the battle.

"Every morning at DoSomething.org, our computers greet us with a report containing over 350 million data points tracking our organization's performance. Our challenge as data scientists is to translate this haystack of information into guidance for staff so they can make smart decisions — whether it's choosing the right headline for today's email blast (should we ask our members to "take action now" or "learn more"?) or determining the purpose of our summer volunteer campaign (food donation drive or recycling campaign?).

In short, we're tasked with transforming data into directives. Good analysis parses numerical outputs into an understanding of the organization. We "humanize" the data by turning raw numbers into a story about our performance."

New Study Confirms Correlation Between Twitter and TV Ratings

New Study Confirms Correlation Between Twitter and TV Ratings | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

"How well does Twitter align with TV program ratings? The recent Nielsen/SocialGuide study confirmed that increases in Twitter volume correlate to increases in TV ratings for varying age groups, revealing a stronger correlation for younger audiences. Specifically, the study found that for 18-34 year olds, an 8.5% increase in Twitter volume corresponds to a 1% increase in TV ratings for premiere episodes, and a 4.2% increase in Twitter volume corresponds with a 1% increase in ratings for midseason episodes. Additionally, a 14.0% increase in Twitter volume is associated with a 1% increase in TV program ratings for 35-49 year olds, reflecting a stronger relationship between Twitter and TV for younger audiences...."

Elements of Compelling Video Storytelling

Elements of Compelling Video Storytelling | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

"Once upon a time, public relations professionals only considered using video for major national stories – a video news release.

But over the past several years, in the throes of a slow and rather quiet death, print media has moved past obsolete into antiquated, and video media has surged forward to replace it.

Internet video channels and the phenomenon of “viral” status has rendered video an essential element in successful national-level business storytelling. This is evident in Forbes, the Wall Street Journal and Inc."
