Google TV: Second time's the charm? - Apple/Google TV failing forward

Google TV: Second time's the charm? - Apple/Google TV failing forward | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

On Friday, Google finally revealed its plans for Google TV in detail. It's releasing a major upgrade that will show up on Google TV-equipped Sony TVs next week, and on the Revue shortly thereafter.
Judging from Google's blog post about the update, it's less about packing in more features--Google TV had plenty of those already--and more about trying to crystallize the basic idea into something a little more refined and coherent. The new version will have what Google says is a simpler interface; it'll play up YouTube more; it's designed to make it easier to find TV shows and movies in both streaming and over-the-air form; and it has a version of the Android Market that will start out with about 50 apps.

GEN WOW #AR Dragons crawling over RotterdamBuildings - Bacardi Real Time Party Pic Projection

Is that a dragon ripping through that building over there?

It appears Bacardi is the latest brand to put projection mapping on the map, here with a very cool implementation in Amsterdam. Here, you even have the ability to submit photos for use in the projection.

Seems like an digital outdoor kind of week here at GEN WOW. But when there's so much coolness happening at once, we just can't help ourselves.

But what's your view? Is Dragon Berry berry cool - or just a drag?

The Psychology of Transmedia Storytelling & as usual, it’s all about the Story, Stupid

The Psychology of Transmedia Storytelling & as usual, it’s all about the Story, Stupid | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

Transmedia storytellers have the full pallet of media at their disposal to construct a story within a rich fabric of experience. The wealth of media technologies allows for the integration of interactive and sharable qualities. The result when done well is a story that moves across media and transcends on and offline space. This is only possible because technology has moved the locus of control to the players. The stories only move across media and across time and space when the audience decides to carry it. Transmedia storytelling creates a collaborative and immersive environment that is new, engaging, and exciting...and participation-dependent. Aspiring transmedia producers need to remember that the created environment, for all the available technological intricacies and opportunities, is only as effective as the story it is built on. At the end of the day, transmedia or monomedia, it the story that counts.

More clarity than usual - Creating a Transmedia Narrative « Thoughts on the T | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

How do you construct a transmedia narrative? Does it differ from stories told in film, books, TV shows, computer games, etc. until today? Yes and no, in my opinion. As a media consumers myself, and having observed and researched several successful and lasting story worlds such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Buffy, various mangas/animes, and, of course, classics such as The Illiad and The Odysee, I noticed several important elements that allowed these respective universes to live on for decades (or millenia, in the case of the latter two) and to inspire not only re-tellings of existing stories, but also expansions of the worlds themselves, even years (or, again, millenia) after they were first conceived of.

Archive: Games will never Tell Stories?! Video Game Writing & the Sense of Story [Writing] - What Games Are

Archive: Games will never Tell Stories?! Video Game Writing & the Sense of Story [Writing] - What Games Are | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

After 30 years of trying, with hundreds of books and white papers having been written on the subject, and the same marketing story saying the same thing about getting better at storytelling continuing to do the same rounds, I think it’s fair to say that games as a storytelling medium doesn’t really hang together.

Considered as a world in motion, like a painting with a sense of story but with a deliberately light touch, yields a better framework for understanding. It is not the case that writing has no place in games. Very far from it in fact, but its place is a portrait-filling rather than a storytelling one.

Videogames are not, in turns out, a storytelling art. They have tried very hard to be, and their reasons for trying are noble, but the results are always ham-fisted. There are no good game stories because game stories don’t really matter. What matters is the game world, in all of its glorious detail.

In writing my book, I mean to break you out of your old mode of thinking that games and stories must converge, because I think that’s a fight that you will always lose. When we learn to describe our own art in our own way and realise what actually does work, then we will finally move forward.

Superb campaign uses augmented reality to bring books to life

Superb campaign uses augmented reality to bring books to life | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

A Canadian publisher has launched a campaign targeting 12-17 year old girls using an augmented reality app to enhance the traditional experience of reading books. The campaign was launched with an in store promotion that allowed users to scan a bookcase to find hidden treasure (follows the book’s story line as well) and if they didn’t have a smart phone with them there was one there in the store to use. We are seeing lots of these sorts of interactive campaigns pop up from both book publishers and traditional print media as they aim to bridge the gap between traditional media and the new wave of technology coming along. Ultimately people are going to end up reading the books on their phones and tablets but it’s refreshing to see companies trying to come up with an innovative alternative that appeals to a whole new audience.
