Free Handbook Download 'Using Computer Games in Education' | futurelab

Free Handbook Download 'Using Computer Games in Education' | futurelab | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

Aimed at teachers and those interested in using games with an educational intent, this handbook aims to provide some useful anchoring points for educators to make sense of the area and to develop practical approaches to the use of computer games as a medium for learning.

In this handbook we aim to summarise not only the key theories around why they are considered to have potential, but how they have been used in the past, how they are used for learning in a family context, what attributes lead to learning, and considerations for using them with young people.

How Storytelling by Apple, Google, Chevy Led to Success | Guest Columnists - Advertising Age

How Storytelling by Apple, Google, Chevy Led to Success | Guest Columnists - Advertising Age | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it
In advertising, the art and craft of storytelling is central to building, maintaining and strengthening the bonds between consumers and brands.

I agree with 99% of what is in this article.  It is a meaningful discussion about storytelling, branding, technology and how much branding/ad professionals need to get better at the whole storytelling thing. The authors are Randy Rothenberg, the president-CEO of IAB and Mike Hughes, the president of the Martin Agency.

I actually got even more insights from the 4 comments other people left on the site -- so don't forget to read those also.

Here's my only quibble and it's something I've noticed in many branding articles.  It's the notion that TV, the news media, radio, etc. are the only ways people have been receiving stories for the last several decades.  The notion is that people are now liberated because they can actively create and share their own stories due to technology. That's silly.

Of course people have been making up and sharing stories with each other for millenia.  So let's keep in mind that when professionals in marketing/branding/ad/pr industries talk this way, they are really only sharing about the mindset of their worlds.

Up until recently that mindset has been about the pushing and telling of messages.  Now there is a revolution underway that is about corporations engaging in sharing stories back and forth with customers.

Which gets us back to the point of the article -- we need to think better about our stories, build storytelling skills, and understand the dynamics of story sharing.

Young Creative Entrepreneurs: transmedia in the UK is the future

Young Creative Entrepreneurs: transmedia in the UK is the future | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

I think transmedia is the future for all of us in the digital industry. Consumers are expecting us to give them 360-degree experiences in everything – whether it is a piece of software, an advertisement, an app or a film. The idea that these things are separate watertight compartments is dead – especially for the consumer.
With ubiquitous computing has dawned an era of ubiquitous digital experiences. This has challenges for people who are still clinging to traditional forms of digital content production. For others, who are willing to experiment and think outside the box, the future has no boundaries.

When Outlaws are Innovators: An Interview with Jonathan Taplin (Part One)

My new USC colleague, Jonathan Taplin, is like the cool older cousin that everyone of my generation always wished they had. He was at Woodstock and was hanging out with Bob Dylan and his mob at the Newport Folk Festival the day Dylan went electric. He organized The Concert for Bangladesh and produced Mean Streets. He went on tour with The Band and he was behind the scenes helping to negotiate the deal which saved the Disney Corporation. Now, he's best buddies with T. Bone Barnett and he's the founder of the Annenberg Innovation Lab.

Twitter and TV get close | Social TV | The Bulletin

Twitter and TV get close | Social TV | The Bulletin | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it
The combination of TV and social media, often labeled social TV, has steadily gained attention as the television industry seeks ways to retain viewers, particularly for live events that people can react to in real time. Facebook, too, is working hard to showcase conversations about TV and media, allowing for viewing of some shows directly from its website.

Cowell, formerly of “American Idol,” said he appreciated that social media sites made live TV feel even livelier. That is likely to be an important element for “The X Factor,” which has drawn an average of 12.5 million viewers for its taped audition episodes — higher than Fox’s previous average on Tuesdays and Wednesdays but lower than Cowell’s expectations.

“When we go live,” he said, with performances and votes on Nov. 2, “I do think we’re going to see a real difference.”

Transmedia vs Multi Platform Storytelling: Once Upon a Time | Rebecca Lieb

Transmedia vs Multi Platform Storytelling: Once Upon a Time | Rebecca Lieb | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

We won’t know until we see it, but it’s more than likely these new YouTube channels will read as brand extensions, not extensions of the stories the brands are telling in other digital or analog channels. It’s a gut instinct, but it seems likely that the considerable editorial talent at these brands has yet to acquire the skills, the thinking and the mindset to arc their stories across multiple channels, in multiple places. Print, digital and video departments aren’t yet tightly integrated, not to mention orchestrated. Writers aren’t necessarily telegenic. Eloquent as they may be in print, their storytelling skills don’t always translate into talking to a camera (nor is that what they were hired for).

The Nokia optics are thin plastic plates that have 300-micron gratings built into the surface that direct video from a small input grating through the plate to a large output grating that you look through to see the real world and the injected video. These optics are as thin as reading glasses, and when paired with a Vuzix display engine, will finally allow a form factor that truly looks like sunglasses. It is the culmination of years of technology development and finally close to becoming a reality.

Social TV - Zeebox offers new way to watch television - informitv -

Social TV - Zeebox offers new way to watch television - informitv - | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

The real opportunity for social recommendation is more likely to be with special interest programmes, or shows that you may otherwise miss. Existing social networks, like Facebook and Twitter may be better able to enable this.

“I’ve seen the future of social TV and its name is Zeebox,” is the quote from Christian Herdandez of Facebook in the promotional video on the site. The problem for Zeebox is that Facebook, with its claimed 800 million active users, may be in a better position to exploit that.

Of course, what we are seeing could just be the initial iteration of Zeebox, and many of these apparent limitations could be addressed. The team says that over the coming months they plan to add support for recorded programmes and offer remote control of digital video recorders, as well as supporting popular video on demand services like the BBC iPlayer. The plan is also to roll out to the United States and other European countries in early 2012.
