People remember storiesAudiences need to re-engage every ten minutes via a storyWe learn through metaphor which are deep and rich with meaning A Story is not a Vignette Stories of Corporate Mythology

The corporate world needs to recognize the importance of mythology. To figure out:

What is our corporate mythology? What are the stories that encapsulate our organization truth, our values, our DNA?Who are we?What do we stand for?If the company were a hero, what has been its quest?Where have we failed? What have we learned? How have we overcome? What our strengths? What are our weaknesses? Why is it important for us to be here right now?

Preliminary Storyboards for Transmedia Stories

Storyboards are used to organize a story and list its key elements. A transmedia narrative can contain a combination of video, text, still photos, audio, graphics and interactivity presented in a nonlinear format. The first step in storyboarding a transmedia narrative is to divide the story into logical, nonlinear parts. These parts might be based on characters, settings, events, or other aspects of the story. Pratten’s LowLifes is an example of how a transmedia project can be divided into logical parts based on characters. The synopsis lays out the basic premise of the story:

Gr8 item on music in games. "It's Time for Games to Move Beyond 'Cinematic'" IGN

Gr8 item on music in games. "It's Time for Games to Move Beyond 'Cinematic'" IGN | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

For better or for worse, this is the way things are, and while gamers spend a lot of time discussing the impact of cinematic presentation in a general sense, it's also worth analysing how this general trend impacts upon specific aspects of games; in this case, music. While video game scores reflect the move towards Hollywood-esque production values, the world of game music isn't destined to simply ape the products of the silver screen: it's destined to become truly unique. Let's explore how game music is changing and will change.

Let's celebrate this uniqueness about the medium of games. We in the western world have an exceptionally great tradition of dramatic music, from a legendary opera composer such as Wagner to an acclaimed film composer such as Morricone. But neither film nor opera gave a viewer the freedom to stay in one moment for as long as they wanted; to be in real control of the narrative and action. We have that freedom. Music is slowly but surely stepping up to the plate and truly embracing the unique nature of the art of games, and we can see it happening in titles such as Limbo.

Missed this? Yammer Uses Billboards to Show That Billboards Don’t Work…and Fails | The Hangline

Missed this? Yammer Uses Billboards to Show That Billboards Don’t Work…and Fails | The Hangline | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

How many tweets go ignored? How many Facebook statuses? Voicemails? Emails? Post-it notes? Everything is one-way until an audience responds. A response could be visiting a website mentioned in an interesting tweet, buying an item promoted in an email, calling a phone number from a direct mail piece or even just being more aware of a brand seen on a billboard. Social media hasn’t put a nail in the coffin of old media. It’s simply made it easier and cheaper to throw around thousands of one-way communications in the hopes that one of them sticks.

So Yammer can try to say old media is obsolete all they want. Myriad outdoor campaigns prove otherwise. I suspect most of their email marketing and social media tactics have gone relatively ignored until now. It took old media and a debate-inducing message to get the most attention they’ve probably seen in a long time. So congratulations to them on stirring the pot and getting some attention. This billboard is probably working like gangbusters.

How to Ride a Lion: A Call for a Higher Transmedia Criticism (Part One)

As people here on the west coast are getting ready for the April 6 Transmedia Hollywood conference to be held at the USC Cinema School (hint, hint - tickets still available), my old colleagues on the East Coast -- the fine folks in the Futures of Entertainment Consortium (formerly the Convergence Culture Consortium) which I helped to establish back at MIT -- released a significant new white paper which calls for more critical engagement with what does and does not work in the current generation of transmedia entertainment.
