iterary types used to run the world. To understand life and society, people counted on great orators and poets and interpreters of sacred texts. Political, moral and literary power were the same: Apt analogies and convincing metaphors were taken as arguments, not just pretty wordplay.

Storytelling is about behavior

Storytelling is about behavior | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

My life reached a turning point the day I attended Robert McKee’s seminar on storytelling for the first time. As I listened to him, I began to see everything as a form of storytelling. And I soon realized that while there are many techniques for teaching how to structure a story, the most effective one, by far, is to try to understand the human soul in all its positive and negative aspects.

What Storytellers Can Teach Instructional Designers

What Storytellers Can Teach Instructional Designers | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it
People love to hear stories and think in terms of the traditional beginning, middle, and end structure we all associate with a classic yarn.

“As an instructional designer I would spend six weeks to six months crafting the story and in broadcast news we would tell many compelling stories every day crafting them a few hours before they were broadcast,’” he writes. “I see very little difference between what ‘we’ do and what other related creative industries do.”

"Don't Mean To Be Alarmist, But The TV Business May Be Starting To Collapse" Business Insider

"Don't Mean To Be Alarmist, But The TV Business May Be Starting To Collapse" Business Insider | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

The question is... how fast?...We still consume some TV content, but we consume it when and where we want it, and we consume it deliberately: In other words, we don't settle down in front of the TV and watch "what's on." And, again with the exception of live sports, we've gotten so used to watching shows and series without ads that ads now seem extraordinarily intrusive and annoying. Our kids see TV ads so rarely that they're actually curious about and confused by them: "What is that? A commercial?"

Comms Leaders Urge Industry To Embrace “Storytelling”

Comms Leaders Urge Industry To Embrace “Storytelling” | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

[Interesting perspective...]

Striking a somewhat discordant note, Weber Shandwick digital executives James Warren and Mark Pinsent suggested that the industry should focus less on storytelling and more on “storyhearing”, to better understand the position of the audience.
“Storytelling is an art,” said Warren. “Art is useless because its aim is to create a mood, not inform or instruct.”
Instead, the duo asserted that the PR world “needs more scientists than artists” and said it must become much smarter in its use of data. “We are very naive about using insight to tell our stories,” said Warren.

Aaron Sorkin Wants Your Attention

Aaron Sorkin Wants Your Attention | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

One of America's best storytellers explains what it's like to tell stories in the digital age....

Excerpt:

'Walt: You’re saying your writing hasn’t changed because of digital. What about your life?

Sorkin: I have lots of digital stuff, just like everybody. But “I’m all but computer illiterate, which I’m not proud of.” Mostly I just use my computer to write scripts. But I’m amazed that 3-and-a-half-year-olds can resonate with computers right away. “If I could ask Steve Jobs anything, it would be ‘What’s that magic trick?’”

But storytelling hasn’t really changed that much. The digital age has brought us five-, six-minute stories. That’s really cool. And it’s great that people have these great tools to make movies, like my daughter, who has a laptop and iPhone, and does that all the time.

“I think what we might see is digital filmmaking sort of becoming the new indie film.” But we still have to “distinguish between what’s going to be good and what’s not going to be good.”

There are lots of crappy $100 million movies. But at least when we buy a ticket to that, “we know there was a vetting process.” In journalism, it’s hard to get a job at the New York Times. But you don’t need credentials to start your own digital newspaper. (That’s a good thing, Aaron.)...'

Every Platform Tells a Story: Transmedia has the power! — The Digital Shift

Every Platform Tells a Story: Transmedia has the power! — The Digital Shift | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

When it came to teaching his young students, some of whom weren’t even born at the time of the tragedy, Plemmons knew the impact of 9/11 couldn’t be captured by a single account—or even a single medium. He read aloud to his fifth graders Maira Kalman’s nonfiction picture book, Fireboat (Putnam, 2002), about the heroic role of the John J. Harvey that day, and had them watch video clips of the actual fireboat pumping water. In computer lab, kids followed a pathfinder, or a guide to locating online resources, that included photo galleries, primary-source newscasts, personal accounts, and time lines.

Seven tips in digital storytelling from the New York Times and CNN

Seven tips in digital storytelling from the New York Times and CNN | Stories - an experience for your audience - | Scoop.it

"We are in a golden age of storytelling" was the message shared by the New York Times's assistant managing editor Jim Roberts early on in a session at the News World Summit today named 'Obituary: The death of the traditional news story".

This article is slanted toward journalists. But think about it -- if you are using content, or creating content in your business to drive sales, then in many ways you are being a journalist. Especially if you attend conferences or events and report on those later to your customers/community.

So these 7 tips are pretty interesting and I bet you can incorporate many of them as your develop and promote your content. Like, 'avoid the 900-word valueless story' and 'incorporate live feeds' into your content. Hmmm -- that's an intesting one to get your head wrapped around. But that could be a lot of fun to do, especially at conferences or events.

So check these tips out. They are not your typical 'digital storytelling tips' that are a dime-a-dozen on the web. And I hope you get some good ideas!
