What another great post from Rohit Bhargava.


You've gathered your stories, spent time crafting them, practiced them time and again, and then when you tell it to a customer or prospect, you bomb.


Arrggghhh!! How frustrating! So what's a biz storyteller to do? Read Bhargava's post and his 'Do Not Do This' list!


I chuckled when I read the 2 pieces of advice he finds people usually receive:

  1. Tell more stories.
  2. Use bigger fonts.


LOL -- neither one of these will work!

You know, these all sound like great ideas. And you might want to use a few in your organization.


Here's the caveat though -- in my story work with organizations, when they use some of these methods to generate stories, what they sometimes get are NOT stories. More often they are poorly crafted stories.


But the organization thinks what they get are fine. Unfortunately, because they are sub-par, so are their results.


The solution? Either formally train folks in storytelling, or make sure the collected stories are well crafted by someone trained in storytelling. Someone trained in marketing, journalism or PR might not work -- again, personal experience speaks. 


These ideas are creative but treat them wisely. And treat your storytelling seriously to maximize your results.

This article shows that it's possible to create a storytelling culture in organisations. However, I think that 'tips' are not enough and there are quite some managers who go for the 'quick win' and 'quick read'. Creating a storytelling culture takes time (not toi mention the maintenance of that, the greatest challenge). If anyone is inspired by this article, I would suggest reading Annette Simmon's 'The Story Factor' and 'Whoever tells the best story wins'. It's all in there...

We all have stories to tell. Our individual stories make the our collective stories. Our stories define who we are. This is a great way to collect stories in organizations. The trick will be to convince people that storytelling is a value added contribution. We tell stories to children because we believe in them but somehow we forget as we get older

I LOVE this list -- because it is totally different than what you might expect from yet another article with a storytelling list!


Here the author Dorit Sasson focuses on YOUR relationship with the story you want to tell -- and how to get emotionally clear about it before you ever tell it.


Now why in the heck is this important? Because stories are all about conveying emotion and engaging emotions along the way to delivering a key message and meaning.


But if you are not clear about your emotional connection to the story, chances are you will flop when sharing it. You won't connect to your audience. 


So go grab this list. Check off what you can. Work on what you need to. Get way better at storytelling.

Not sure how to get started in crafting your brand story? Here's a piece by Jim Signorelli with 5 tips on where to starting looking for the qualities and elements you want your brand story to embody. And don't forget his last tip -- ask your customers!

 

Start answering the questions Jim poses and it will make crafting and sharing your brand story much easier -- and just remember -- your brand story is made up of a set of stories that you get to share and tell, IMHO.

 

The creation of a 'grand narrative' -- a mono-story -- that reflects ALL you are about is passe and not as workable as in the past. We are moving away from the 'grand narrative' notion to the understanding of the power of sets of micro-stories -- even in marketing. This article really does not address this issue, so just keep this in the back of your mind as you are digging for your stories.

 

There is value in distilling these stories down to a workable few. So dig into these 5 places, have fun, and see what you come up with!

Curt Einstein would put it:  Tell me what you did and how you did it from A to Z.  If they couldn't tell the story of how it happened, then they may have been the boss but they didn't do it.


Lee Thayer's:  The measure of performance is performance tells what one has done in order to do what needed doing to accomplish the required results.  It's about results, not activities.

Biz Story colleague Sean Buvala wrote this piece and it brought a grin to my face -- because IT IS TRUE!!


So glad he put together a biz storytelling warning label for us all. Good job Sean!


Unlike those annoying warning labels that come with every pillow you buy (and quickly remove at home), keep this one about storytelling front and center.

I like this post. It is a thoughtful read about the popularity of business storytelling, and the resistance to it by many business people and organizations.


Knowing about and understanding resistance to business storytelling will help us all -- whether you are an entrepreneur, small business, or working in an enterprise. Because we can then find work-arounds for the resistance.


I hope your awareness is expanded by this article, and you get some good tips about how to work with any resistance you encounter as you share your stories and advocate for more business storytelling.

Most of the ideas presented around storytelling are focused on simple reasons why storytelling is important and some marginal tips for telling a better story. The problem there is that we’re a step ahead of ourselves."

 

 

Whenever UX Magazine writes an article about storytelling I read it -- because they are usually sooooo good! And here's another one just for you.

 

UX Magazine is for geeks who are into User Experience design when developing software. UX design is all about using stories to create more user-friendly tech products. Way cool. I love working with engineers and how open they are to stories.

 

Anyway, this article is a must-read because it focuses our attention on where anyone working with stories needs to go first. As the author Sarah Doody says, "We’ve gone straight to how to tell the story of an experience or a product and skipped over the crucial element of why we’re telling these stories in the first place."

 

She continues: "But, if we truly want to make great experiences and products for people, we need to stop focusing on competing and start focusing on creating—creating products that are extensions of our own personal stories. . . you first must be the consumer. What you create must stem from your own personal story. You must live and breath for the experience, product, or business you are creating."

 

You tell 'em Sarah! She cites Steve Jobs, Jack Dorsey, and Mark Zuckerberg as examples of business leaders able to do this. And Sarah shares other stories to make her point.

 

She then poses a series of questions at the end of the article to help us focus on our 'why', our personal stories, and meeting the needs of customers.

 

And don't forget to read the comments at the end of Sarah's blog post. Along with the other article today from Thaler Pekar, we have a wealth of insights to make us story rich!

What’s your story? Finding and telling an organization’s most compelling stories is always my first step in the consulting process.

 

Here are 8 great storytelling tips for any nonprofit or for profit business. It's all about how to find your stories.

 

There are plenty of articles on how to tell a really engaging story that moves people to action. But where do you get those stories from?

 

Follow these tips and you will soon have a wealth of stories to choose from!  I particularly like tip #6 -- Listen. Yes! So often this is left out of the equation. We are so busy thinking about the questions to ask and how to respond that we forget that the magic in evoking stories is simply to listen delightedly -- not critically.

 

And then tip #8 -- don't polish your stories too much. Well, keep them authentic but do clean them up a bit. There is no excuse not to have a well-crafted story. Not everyone on video is a good storyteller. And turning a recorded story into a well-written story takes crafting. My advice? Craft an awesome story while keeping it authentic --you want the person telling the story to be shown in the best light possible!
