What a great post from colleague Shawn Callahan about most people's tendency to want to write out their business stories and the advice to NOT do so.


What??!! Yes. Resist this temptation. Callahan explains why and what to do instead. Follow his advice. And if you absolutely must write down your stories -- do so and them set it aside. Scripted stories and sounding like a robot are not allowed! 


All really good storytellers know the limitations of writing down their stories. So keep building your improv storytelling skills for maximum results.

Wow, thank you so much for sharing this! Ana, to your question about not having women speakers, we've only just started this show, and this was the second episode. We do plan on having women panelists for future episodes, and some very influential ones at that. There are some really big plans for this format for the future.

I LOVE this list -- because it is totally different than what you might expect from yet another article with a storytelling list!


Here the author Dorit Sasson focuses on YOUR relationship with the story you want to tell -- and how to get emotionally clear about it before you ever tell it.


Now why in the heck is this important? Because stories are all about conveying emotion and engaging emotions along the way to delivering a key message and meaning.


But if you are not clear about your emotional connection to the story, chances are you will flop when sharing it. You won't connect to your audience. 


So go grab this list. Check off what you can. Work on what you need to. Get way better at storytelling.

Yeah -- what a great reminder! Craft your biz stories as sequenced content!


Better yet, plan a content campaign of sequential articles with a narrative arc.


Or serialize a narrative over several posts!


That is where my mind went after reading this article. Now the author here is really just talking about creating a series of posts over time all on the same topic that work together.


But my storytelling mind said "Woah! There is a lot more here that could be done." 


So this article presents a great idea -- but doesn't go quite far enough for all us biz storytellers. Yet it is still worth curating and reading because of all the tips and points it does make.


Dig in (it's not long), get the interesting stats showing how sequenced content gets results, and start connecting the stories together in a series of articles/blog posts, etc!

What another great post from Rohit Bhargava.


You've gathered your stories, spent time crafting them, practiced them time and again, and then when you tell it to a customer or prospect, you bomb.


Arrggghhh!! How frustrating! So what's a biz storyteller to do? Read Bhargava's post and his 'Do Not Do This' list!


I chuckled when I read the 2 pieces of advice he finds people usually receive:

  1. Tell more stories.
  2. Use bigger fonts.


LOL -- neither one of these will work!


Find out where you are making your mistakes -- and go fix them. Thanks Rohit for putting this insightful article together!

As content takes its rightful place at the forefront of marketing, I'm seeing many marketers fail at basic storytelling.

 

Marketers are ineffective when they use the classic "customer testimonial" format and pop that onto their blog or make it into a video. "Here’s our product. It is great. Here are customers who say it is great. Now buy some of our product." This just doesn't hold people's attention.

 

How interesting would a book or movie be were it to have this plot?:
Boy meets girl.
They fall in love.
They get married.

 

That's what most people do with their business writing.

 

Effective storytelling

The best stories drip with conflict. They have a hero and sometimes a villain. There is a story arc. As a writing teacher once told me: "Writing without conflict is propaganda."

All business have conflict: lack of sales, poor service, employee malaise... 

The issue is often that management doesn't want to talk about the negative but you have to have a hellish situation in order to make a story compelling.

I love this article because it points to 3 specific stories that need to be shared in order for social change to happen.


If you are a business or nonprofit focused on making a difference in the world and advocating for social change, these 3 stories are critical to craft and tell.


As the author Cynthia Starks says, the stories need to be:

  1. The story of Self -- why YOU are passionate about this cause. This is the story that most people/organizations ignore. But if people don't know who you are and why you are involved, minimal trust and influence will be built. 
  2. The story of Us -- which is a story of inclusiveness. In crafting social change stories, people want to come together in community. 
  3. The story of Now -- which is a story that builds urgency and galvanizes action.

Now here's a fascinating 'shake 'em up" article about storytelling and conflict.

 

The basic premis is that in storytelling -- and in biz storytelling -- we are told conflict is absolutely necessary to have to be successful. This article says "Maybe not."

 

The author, who is not named, talks about Western and non-western story models. In the end, not all stories need to be about conflict.

 

Just like all stories don't need to be about a hero (shock, gasp! But it is true).

 

They can instead be about contrast and exploration. Stories can be about community instead of a lone hero.

 

So this article is just a reminder to get out of our storytelling straightjackets and our western myopia.

 

It gets me thinking about my own biz stories. Do I have any that DO NOT contain conflict? Surprise surprise -- yes. And I could craft them to be even more compelling by not getting sucked into adding conflict.

 

Hmmmm -- now that's food for thought and a fun thing to play with!

Many companies don't know where to start when it comes to storytelling. Especially, B2B companies. There is a good way to start and that is asking the right questions. And what a better way than to be ask questions geared toward the underutilized marketing tool of storytelling.
