Historian Reveals Ben Franklin's Not-So-Famous Sister - WBUR | Storied Lives

Historian Reveals Ben Franklin's Not-So-Famous Sister - WBUR | Storied Lives | Storied Lives | Scoop.it

"WBUR - Historian Reveals Ben Franklin's Not-So-Famous Sister."

 By Alex Ashlock.

Penelope's insight:

Did you know that Benjamin Franklin had a sister? I didn't. They wrote letters back and forth--Benny and Jenny. He wrote more letters to her than to anyone else.

Benjamin Franklin was the author of his own life. His youngest sister Jane was the author of other people’s lives, according to historian Jill Lepore. Her new book is entitled, “Book of Ages: The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin."

This new book by Lepore is a fascinating peek into the life of a woman that most barely knew.

Breaking My Silence: A Kidney Donor Speaks Up - HuffingtonPost.com | Storied Lives | Scoop.it

You’re at Starbucks during your lunch break when you realize you’ve forgotten your wallet at your desk. Feeling embarrassed, you turn to the coworker standing behind you on line and reluctantly ask, “do you mind paying for my coffee today?”

Penelope's insight:
Recently, I became acquainted with Ari Sytner on Twitter. He wrote a book on his inspiring story of kidney donation, and I just had to share it.

When it comes to donating an organ, many questions come to mind. He addresses 100 questions in the book he struggled through during a year of research and introspection.

A moving and informative book, it's aimed at educating and inspiring others to explore the journey of kidney donation. Now that is a story worth reading.

110 Drawings and Paintings by J.R.R. Tolkien: Of Middle-Earth and Beyond

110 Drawings and Paintings by J.R.R. Tolkien: Of Middle-Earth and Beyond | Storied Lives | Scoop.it

A few years ago, we featured J.R.R. Tolkien’s personal cover designs for the Lord of the Rings trilogy, a series of novels that justifiably made his name as a world-builder in prose (and occasional verse), but rather overshadowed his output as an illustrator. He didn’t just do covers for his own books, either. You can get a sense of the breadth of Tolkien’s visual art at the Tolkien Gateway’s gallery of over 100 images by Tolkien, which reveal the landscapes, letters, interiors, and animals within the creator of Middle-Earth’s mind.

Florida Humanities Council Meet Zora - Florida Humanities Council | Storied Lives | Scoop.it
Who was Zora Neale Hurston? Get to know this singular woman, author of one of Florida’s greatest novels, "Their Eyes Were Watching God."
Penelope's insight:
This is worth checking out just to hear prolific Florida novelist Zora Neale Hurston herself singing a song she learned from a Florida railroad worker in 1933. The workers sang this when they were lining up the rails.

As novelist Stetson Kennedy wrote: Those were hard times back then, during the Great Depression of the 1930s. People sometimes referred to them as the “root-hog-or-die” days, meaning that if you didn’t keep grubbing you were a goner. Lots of folks were “hollerin’ hongry,” and longing for a little gravy on their grits.

Toxic veggie burgers - Morningstar Farms exposed

Toxic veggie burgers - Morningstar Farms exposed | Storied Lives | Scoop.it

September 12, 2015 - (NaturalHealth365)

"Having pre-made food options can be very exciting for vegetarian lovers – especially when schedules are busy. It’s “just what the world ordered” according to MorningStar Farms®. While the brand pleads with America to take the “green” challenge by eating more veggies and less meat, MorningStar Farms® is hoping you won’t read this article and discover what’s really in their food products.

Thanks to powerful (suggestive) marketing techniques, vegetarian and vegan shoppers are led to believe that the brand’s “Veg of Allegiance” must mean that their products are safe to eat.  But, reality reveals a very different story. (it’s not what you think)."

DebbyBruck's curator insight, September 14, 2015 9:11 PM

The yellow highlighted ingredients are NOT the only ones bad for human health in this product.... Corn, soy and sugar beets are the most genetically modified veggies there are. Gluten has a protein in it called gliaden in it which can wreak havoc on the digestive system. Sugar (made from sugar beets) - what is it good for? If you cannot pronounce ingredients, they likely came from a lab which creates artificial flavor enhancers, emulsifiers and additives specifically to assist your taste buds to love them - and get addicted to them. Autolyzed yeast is one pseudonym for MSG, which is made specifically to hide rancidity of fats, is an excito-toxin and (for those allergic to it, MSG could be life threatening). Hydrolyzed anything is made from long chains of fatty acids that are hard for a body to break down and can contribute to obesity and heart disease. There are numerous ingredients which are GM (including the corn oil, which is genetically modified with glyphosate - from un-organic corn), but none of the GM ingredients are listed as GMO... Who would buy this product if it was truthfully named "Toxic Veggie Burgers"?
