Dave Haden's comment, Today, 1:59 AM
A formal written exam in English, and a ban on exam re-sits, have pulled down the GCSE English results. Schools can no longer play the system, by putting pupils with weak English skills through lots of re-sits. And pupils can no longer cheat via having home coursework completed by others, or conive with teachers who will over-mark their coursework - as was evidenced in previous years by the vast gulf between the coursework marks and the exam marks in English. Teachers and unions will squeal about the apparent drop in this year's GCSE English marks, and try to blame harsh marking, but it many cases it will be because they can no longer manipulate the system.
