Staffordshire's Leigh Purnell is back from a 15-month long record-breaking journey around the world in a classic London black cab. It has taken him and two friends 450 days - and if it been on a taxi meter it would have cost them £80,000. Instead, they made money, raising £20,000 for the Red Cross. Leigh arrived back in the UK today with 'Hannah' - the weather-beaten, 20-year-old K-registered black cab.

JCB is set make a new Hi-Viz machine to tackle safety concerns within the construction-site dumper market. It which will go into production at JCB's world headquarters in Rocester at the end of 2017, creating more than 50 jobs.

A growing fabrication specialist is creating a dozen new jobs after opening a second factory in Stoke-on-Trent. Over the past two years Patera Engineering has seen its turnover triple and its workforce more than double from 18 to just over 40. The new 50,000 square-foot factory will be dedicated to assembling components manufactured at the company's core site, at the City Park Trading Estate.

"Building work on a £7.7 million training and leisure facility for gambling giant bet365 is set to start within weeks. Planners have approved the application for the development on a two-acre site within Etruria Valley. The 33,500 square foot development will feature two five-a-side football pitches, a multi-use games area, changing rooms, training rooms, offices and on-site staff parking for workers at bet365. Regeneration specialist St Modwen has clinched the deal to build the centre which should be completed by next April."

Online floor and tile retailer Tile Mountain has relocated to its new purpose-built site, investing £10m. The new 120,000sq ft facility is based in Stoke-on-Trent and consists of a new warehouse, showroom and office complex across a 10 acre site, with the company officially completing the move last month. 70 new jobs are to be created.

Ambulance staff have moved into their new £3 million station in Stoke-on-Trent. The new hub at Festival Park has everything under one roof and has replaced a 48-year-old base in Penkhull. It will be served by 247 members of staff and 35 ambulances, with the site being manned 24 hours a day.

Supermarket Aldi will create 40 jobs when it opens at the empty Kingsmead development in the autumn while Homesense, which is likely to open at the Queen's Retail Park in June, is taking on 50 workers.

The Department for Education has just approved Stoke-on-Trent City Learning Trust's plans to create 'City Enterprise Academy', a new 100 place Alternative Provision academy. The CEA will open in 2018 and will allow students to work with business partners such as Autonet Insurance.  The aim is to create an entrepreneurial approach which will turn around the life chances of students, through working on real-life enterprise projects.

More than 150 new jobs are set to be created at a call centre in Stoke-on-Trent - telephone giant Vodafone have announced tonight. The move, which will see the company's existing Potteries call centre expand, is part of a wider scheme to create 2,100 new customer service jobs across the Midlands, the North and Scotland over the next two years.

Alton Towers owner Merlin Entertainments has said the recovery is "well underway" at the North Staffordshire theme park following a rollercoaster accident in June 2015. Merlin Entertainments reported revenues of £1.45bn and a hike in revenue and pre-tax profit. The group is eyeing a number of sites in the West Midlands for new themed attractions.

Keele in North Staffordshire has been chosen for a pilot gas project that will aim to discover if the UK’s gas grid can be 'decarbonised' by injecting hydrogen into the network. The three-year, National Grid-led HyDeploy project, which has been awarded £6.8 million and will use the gas network of Keele University in Staffordshire. This new green project starts in April 2017.
