The high-density hydrogen fuel can therefore act as a storage medium for alternative technologies such as solar and wind, or as a carbon neutral source for hydrogen that is used for other commercial applications.

 

The first generation of the FFC technology demonstrated that a cheap nanoscaled form of catalyst material can help drive the production of hydrogen fuels with little energy input. The performance of the second-generation FFC technology, FFCat™, already outperforms the industry benchmark despite costing only a fraction of the price and consisting of environmentally benign materials.

Le stockage de l'énergie est l'action qui consiste à placer une quantité d'énergie en un lieu donné pour permettre son utilisation ultérieure. Par extension, le terme « stockage d'énergie » est souvent employé pour désigner le stockage de matière qui contient cette énergie. La maîtrise du stockage de l'énergie est particulièrement importante pour valoriser les énergies alternatives, telles que l'éolien ou le solaire, sûres et renouvelables, mais par nature intermittentes.

On s'intéressera ici principalement à l'opération consistant à créer un stock à partir d'énergie disponible, et non directement à la gestion des stocks (notamment des stocks d'énergie fossile), ni au déstockage.

Le stockage d'énergie est un enjeu à la hauteur de la consommation d'énergie : primordial.

The Smart Energy 25 flywheel system includes a rotating carbon-fiber composite rim, levitated on hybrid magnetic bearings operating in a near-frictionless vacuum-sealed environment.

 

The rim itself is fabricated from a patented combination of high-strength, lightweight fiber composites, including graphite and fiberglass combined with resins, which allow the flywheel to rotate at high speeds (16,000 rpm) and store large amounts of energy as compared to flywheels made from metals.

 

To reach its operational speed, the system draws electricity from the grid to power a permanent magnet motor. As the rim spins faster, it stores energy kinetically.

The needs of Storage for LENR is not the same as for intermitent energies. The proble of LENR is that it cannot startup or adjust in second, but in many minutes if not few hours. Flywheel may be a solution in ground installation or in heavy vehicles. It is not unlike supercapacitors, but differ sensibly from classic accumulators.

How a redox flow battery works

The redox flow cell (red for reduction = electron uptake, ox for oxidation = electron release) is an accumulator. It stores energy in electrolyte solutions contained in tanks. The electrolyte circulate from these tanks through a cell, which generates electricity from the fluid in a chemical process.

The most common kind of this type of battery is the vanadium redox flow battery. The vanadium is charged and discharged in small reaction chambers. Several of these cells are lined up in stacks, which increases the battery’s power.

 

Redox flow batteries offer several advantages; they are cost-effective, robust, durable, and can be individually customized.

Energy storage in the different types of capacitors, magnetic and superconductive systems are also discussed.
There is an unusually broad discussion of the various methods for the production and storage of hydrogen.
More than half of the pages are dedicated to the storage of energy in electrochemical systems. That is where this book stands out from all the rest.
Rather than merely describing the different types of batteries, it teaches the materials science principles that determine the voltages and capacities of electrochemical systems and devices, and their kinetic properties. Usually energy-generating devices require a separate battery for storing energy, but for the first time, a single power cell is capable of generating and storing energy at the same time.

 

Two things that are becoming increasingly important parts of our clean technology future are improved batteries and mechanical energy harvesting devices, also known as piezoelectric devices, that can generate electricity from our everyday movements. Typically in renewable energy set up, there is the energy generator (whether using mechanical, solar, wind or other sources) and then, ideally, there is the energy storage component, very often a lithium-ion battery. In that scenario the generator turns the renewable energy into electricity and then the battery turns the electricity into chemical energy for storage.

 

In a new technology breakthrough, researchers at Georgia Tech have developed the first self-charging power cell that is both a mechanical energy harvester and a battery at the same time. Essentially, the device skips the step of generating electricity and converts the mechanical energy directly into chemical energy.

For smart grids to really work we need ways to store energy more efficiently, i.e. better batteries. When will large scale better batteries become available? What's on the horizon for energy storage?

Another possibility is to use the energy generated by instantaneous sources (wind, sun, waves) before origins occurring storable (gas, coal, water reservoirs, etc.)
