Are GiveWell's top charities the best option for every donor? | Stiftungen & Philanthropy | Scoop.it

We’re sometimes asked whether we think GiveWell’s top charities are the “best,” in some absolute sense of the word, or whether we’d ever advise that a donor give to an opportunity outside of our recommendations. This post aims to clarify how GiveWell thinks about different giving options and their suitability for different types of donors.”

Why Ford’s $1 Billion Commitment to Mission-Related Investments is a Big Deal–and a Risky One

HistPhil co-editor Benjamin Soskis weighs in on the Ford Foundation's announcement that it will commit $1 billion over the next decade to mission-related investments: "As the divisions between grant-making and investing erode, as more strain is placed on that thin dash holding apart philanthro-capitalism’s component parts, philanthropy might find its ability to offer a critical perspective on the economic system in which it is ensconced blunted. This only underscores the significance of the investment Ford is making and is pushing other foundations to make: the potential returns, both positive and negative, could reshape philanthropy in the 21st century."

Research funding is a gamble so let’s give out money by lottery

"Science is expensive, and since we can’t fund every scientist, we need some way of deciding whose research deserves a chance. So, how do we pick? At the moment, expert reviewers spend a lot of time allocating grant money by trying to identify the best work. But the truth is that they’re not very good at it, and that the process is a huge waste of time. It would be better to do away with the search for excellence, and to fund science by lottery."

Does the Gates’ Letter 2017 answer Warren Buffett’s questions?

"The 2017 Gates Letter leaves one with mixed feelings. It is fair to say that Warren Buffet’s questions go unanswered, as it remains unclear what the incremental benefits have yielded from his massive donation to the Gates Foundation. At the same time, not focusing harder on ‘behaviour’ indicates a puzzling neglect of the long hard slog certain social and development problems demand. Finally, ignoring ‘politics’ and the performance of ‘institutions’ could be a blind-spot that could undo a lot of the gradual progress made by low-income countries around the globe. That is a scary thought."

When (Not) to Site Visit

When (Not) to Site Visit | Stiftungen & Philanthropy | Scoop.it

As valuable as site visits can be, they aren’t always appropriate. Think carefully about your objectives and goals before proceeding into the field: What is the site visit going to add to your understanding of the grantee and their work? What do you want to see/discuss on the visit and why? What are you going to do with the information? Having an unclear purpose and a vague notion of the expected outcome is not setting yourself up for success on a site visit.

We need a science of philanthropy!

We need a science of philanthropy! | Stiftungen & Philanthropy | Scoop.it
Caroline Fiennes schreibt in ihren Kommentar in NATURE, einem der angesehenste Zeitschriften für Naturwissenschaften:"Billions of dollars are being donated without strong evidence about which ways of giving are effective. ... The recipients of funds are increasingly scrutinized, but the effectiveness of donors is not. Funders are rarely punished for under-performing and usually don’t even know when they are: if the work that they fund helps one child but could have helped ten, that ‘opportunity cost’ is felt by the would-be beneficiaries, not by the funder."

And so I am pleased that after many months of analysis and planning, the Ford Foundation’s Board of Trustees has authorized the allocation of up to $1 billion of our endowment, to be phased in over 10 years, for mission-related investments (MRIs). While this field is still emerging, we are making this commitment because we believe MRIs are the next great tool for social transformation, in philanthropy and beyond.

How a $1,000 grant rocked two warring culture

"Much writing about charitable work today is focused on “big.” How to make a “big bet.” Making bigger footprints by replicating your program. Attracting bigger partners to good causes. It’s enticing—who doesn’t love a larger splash? And don’t huge problems require huge solutions?"

Warren Buffett has some excellent advice for foundations that they probably won’t take

"Of the 10 largest grant-making foundations in the US, only two — the MacArthur Foundation and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation — publish investment returns on their websites. MacArthur’s disclosure is exemplary. (So is its performance, perhaps not coincidentally.) I emailed all ten and got nowhere with the rest."

Losing Our Religion: Against Sector Agnosticism

"But declaring sector agnosticism in the context of pursuing social impact is not helpful or wise because it obscures the fact that the sectors play distinct and different roles, as I have argued repeatedly on this blog and especially in this six-part series. And, usually, it is in fact easier, smarter, and more effective to focus single-mindedly on societal impact as a nonprofit."

57 percent of foundations conduct site visits prior to awarding grants and just over half conduct site visits during the term of the grant. The most effective site visits are not about grantees putting on a show but rather are opportunities for funders and grantees to learn from one another with mutual respect and transparency.
