What will the next fifty years bring in the world of social media, mobile, robotics and more? Our fifty year timeline shows you just what could be in store

We wanted to see just how the future is going to shape up for us. So we compiled all the best predictions for digital technology, mobile, social media, and big data over the next fifty years into a timeline so you can see exactly what’s in store.

The timeline covers expected growth in key markets including spend on digital and mobile, as well as big data so we can start to see exactly where this emerging industry will head. Data for the timeline has been gathered from a wide range of sources, in specialist areas to give as wide a view as possible of what’s coming up....

10 Expectations Learners Have!

"We hear often of the "high expectations" schools must have of and for their students, yet we seldom hear of the expectations students have of their schools."

Kathleen McClaskey's curator insight, May 14, 2013 10:03 AM

Learners' expectations constitute the new "rules of engagement" in the relationship that young people want with their schools. Consider these expectations and then have an open dialogue on how you can create "learner-centered" environments where these expectations could be realized for the learners in your school.

Vicki Butler's curator insight, May 14, 2013 11:58 AM

Just had this discussion with a dear friend in his late 70's. Thanks for posting this!

Lou Salza's curator insight, May 15, 2013 11:13 AM

I liked this. It was an opportunity for me to listen to the learner point of view. The 10 expectations are relevant at any level but these are particularly important at the secondary and college level in my view. These expectations also speak to how on line and blended learning environments will or will not connect to learners. well worth 4 minutes!-Lou

Excerpt from the decription on YouTube:" We hear often of the "high expectations" schools must have of and for their students, yet we seldom hear of the expectations students have of their schools. Students' expectations constitute the new "rules of engagement" in the relationship that young people want with their schools."

Elahe Amani's comment, May 15, 2013 7:16 PM
Yes, I think Moocs are great for making learning possible for those who don't have access to good classrooms here in US and also globally. But we, in higher education will continue to face the challenges regarding engaging students in learning ( curricular and co-curricular ) and the challenge of institutions shifting their paradigm from a teaching institution to a learning institutions.
Brad Ovenell-Carter's curator insight, May 16, 2013 10:55 AM

We like a magic bullet, a one trick fix to complex problems. Hence our conversations about STEM, CORE etc. HR has a more nuanced assessment. Some of the tech we're playing with, MOOCs for instance, open another path that some may want to take.

This is a good reminder not to let the means become the end. We've already been down that road and look where we've ended up.

Ana Cristina Pratas's comment, May 18, 2013 1:02 AM
Absolutely Brad - "magic" but the "cure" remains elusive.

(From the article): I'd like the sense that someone of taste and discretion and experience has already whittled down the choices. (That's the problem with search engines, by the way - no taste!) The world needs editing - and yes, I use that word advisedly. Give me the cheeses that matter, offer me a wine list that's manageable. And put all the information that's raining down on us from cyberspace in a convenient, easy-to-handle form. Sorry, I never intended to be a defence of newspapers!
