This is something I wrote a few days back in reply to an online acquaintance: 'For the first time in my life, I am genuinely worried about the levels of vitriolic, assumptive fanaticism in my home country. I look at some of the utterances of the Left, and I don't recognise anything of my…

The baby is Labour, not Corbyn

The baby is Labour, not Corbyn | SteveB's Politics & Economy Scoops | Scoop.it
I’m not as convinced as Corbynites that New Labour is what is lurking in the Party’s shadow, or even that it still exists with much strength. It certainly isn’t accurate to say Labour is full of Blairites and even what remains of the Blair years does not advocate Thatcheresque views with anywhere near the same…

When will the economy fall into recession following the Brexit vote?

When will the economy fall into recession following the Brexit vote? | SteveB's Politics & Economy Scoops | Scoop.it
All economists expect, with an accord rare for that profession, that in the short term the prospect of Brexit will reduce growth. However they disagree on how serious this slow-down will be, and accordingly whether the UK economy will actually fall into recession – the conventional measure for that being two successive quarters of negative growth.

The Way Ahead 4: Proposed Remedy Against Escape into Fear & Isolated Tribes | SteveB's Politics & Economy Scoops | Scoop.it
How can we use the sociology of networking in more constructive ways than spreading fear? The media are each day full of shocking images of racial conflicts and police killings in the USA and the New Nationalism of #Brexit and Trump, see: http://www.fastcoexist.com/3061574/the-new-nationalism-of-brexit-and-trump-is-a-product-of-the-digital-age (by Douglas Ruhkoff) and Friedman's column in my previous blog. THE vast majority of the people in England and Wales think Scotland will vote for independence if the Scottish Government calls a second referendum.

In the Opinium poll of 2,006 adults, conducted after the UK voted to leave the EU, 70 per cent of voters said they believed Scotland would back independence, compared to just 15 per cent who thought Scotland would choose to stay in the Union.

You won't 'get back your country' if you vote for Brexit - you'll give it away

You won't 'get back your country' if you vote for Brexit - you'll give it away | SteveB's Politics & Economy Scoops | Scoop.it
“We want our country back!” is the clarion cry of many who want Britain to leave the European Union. But whose country do they want back exactly? Your country? My country? Or really, just their country? Before we leave the European Union and possibly change our country forever, we need to have an idea what country we’d leave behind, and what country we’d get instead, if we vote for Brexit on 23rd June. Look carefully at those Tories who are running the ‘Leave’ campaign and calling for Britain to completely change direction outside the EU.
