Why should all Australians learn about Steve Irwin?

Why should all Australians learn about Steve Irwin? | Steve Irwin | Scoop.it
Kerry Davis's insight:

Steve contributed to the conservation and protection of Australian wildlife, in particular crocodiles. The awareness and knowledge that Steve provided assisted with the development of pretection programs currently in place.
It is important for students to reflect on the contributions made by Steve Irwin and the ways in which he shifted the views and opinions of the crocodiles. In developing techniques for capturing problematic crocodiles, Steve enabled crocodiles to be relocated, rather than shot by hunters and poachers. Without the contributions mad by Steve in his documentaries and the Australian Zoo, crocodiles may have become endangered.
As sustaining the environment is a key element for the Australian Curriculum, it refers to looking at the,"Actions for a more sustainable future reflect values of care, respect and responsibility, and require us to explore and understand environments"  In reflecting on individuals like Steve Irwin, students are able to establish why and how various apsects of protection and conservation came about. It also ensures students understand the resposibilty and respect needed to ensure our environment is sustained.

Kerry Davis's insight:

Steven Robert Irwin was a notable Australian figure, interested in protecting and conserving the environment and wildlife.
Having been born into a family that owned a wildlife park, Steve was always interested in animals, in particular reptiles.
At the age of ten Steve assisted his father in capturing problematic crocodiles, this continued for many years. Steve developed many techniques and procedures for capturing crocodiles. These methods are now practiced globally by all crocodile capturers in society.

Steve took over  the family owned wildlife park , known today as the Australia Zoo. Steve had ambitions for promoting awareness, protecting and conserving wildlife, in particular crocodiles. Steve developed many documentaries and captured many crocodiles to assist with protection and conservation.
The Australia Zoo is currently a popular tourist attraction, where Steven's children continue to promote awareness and protecting the Australian wildlife.
