Why should all Australians learn about Steve Irwin?
Steve contributed to the conservation and protection of Australian wildlife, in particular crocodiles. The awareness and knowledge that Steve provided assisted with the development of pretection programs currently in place.
It is important for students to reflect on the contributions made by Steve Irwin and the ways in which he shifted the views and opinions of the crocodiles. In developing techniques for capturing problematic crocodiles, Steve enabled crocodiles to be relocated, rather than shot by hunters and poachers. Without the contributions mad by Steve in his documentaries and the Australian Zoo, crocodiles may have become endangered.
As sustaining the environment is a key element for the Australian Curriculum, it refers to looking at the,"Actions for a more sustainable future reflect values of care, respect and responsibility, and require us to explore and understand environments" In reflecting on individuals like Steve Irwin, students are able to establish why and how various apsects of protection and conservation came about. It also ensures students understand the resposibilty and respect needed to ensure our environment is sustained.
