The 'In Rainbows' Experiment: Did It Work?

The 'In Rainbows' Experiment: Did It Work? | Stephen's Collection of music piracy sites | Scoop.it
But what did "the Radiohead experiment," as it would come to be known, mean?
Stephen Sobolewski's insight:

I wanted to find an article that talked about this experiment that Radiohead tried, and I would say succeeded with. They released their seventh studio album telling their fans that they could pay what they wanted, even nothing at all. They ended up making millions and reaching the top of some major charts. While there was still file-sharing occurring with this album, they won 2 grammy awards and were very successful.

US peer-to-peer downloaders buy 30% more digital music legally than their non-downloading friends.
Stephen Sobolewski's insight:

This site provides statistics about how people who download music illegally in the US actually buy 30% more music than those who aren't downloading illegally. This could be because those who are downloading have access to more music, and they may pay for music that they listen to and really like. I know I have done this before, I would download a whole album, listen to it a bunch, then go on iTunes and buy it because I feel like I should contribute to the music I like.

Anti-Piracy Movie Ads Caught Using Pirated Music
Stephen Sobolewski's insight:

This site tells a hilarious story about the anti-piracy movie ads getting caught for pirating the music they used in their video. Talk about IRONIC! I found this very interesting and hypocritical to make an anti-piracy video and have stolen audio in it.

Ed O'Brien on illegal file-sharing [22/09/2009]

Ok, 'nuff said.
Stephen Sobolewski's insight:

Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien speaks his views on illegal file-sharing. I have always found this video interesting because I agree with what he's saying about the innocence of kids wanting to share music purely to experience new music and see what's out there, and the fine line between this and persistent file-sharers that are doing it for money and things like that. This source is somewhat opinionated, but it's opinionated from an artist's perspective, so I found it helpful and interesting.

Freakonomics » How Much Do Music and Movie Piracy Really Hurt the U.S. Economy?

Freakonomics » How Much Do Music and Movie Piracy Really Hurt the U.S. Economy? | Stephen's Collection of music piracy sites | Scoop.it
Stephen Sobolewski's insight:

This site talks about a gray area in the industry. Do we count illegal downloads as "lost sales"? Because some people have the excuse where they say they wouldn't have even listened to the band or watched the movie if they had to pay for it simply because it's not worth the money to them. One must also consider the fact that the money they don't spend on movies and music is being spent elsewhere on other products, so the US economy really doesn't get hurt that bad by music and movie piracy.
