STEMbite: Transforming Video Lessons with Google Glass

STEMbite: Transforming Video Lessons with Google Glass | Whole-school STEM & PBL | Scoop.it

Two months ago, I received Google Glass. No, I don’t work for Google, and I’m not a software developer. I am an online science teacher, one of the only teachers in the world to have the highly coveted device. Naturally, I figured I should do something useful with it. So I started STEMbite, a series of video lessons on math and science that I film through Google Glass"

STEMbite looks like a very promising resource.

Google Glass has recieved a great deal of negative press in recent months, and much of it from the education sector.  Andrew Vanden Heuvel flips that coin to show the other side, using Google Glass to create some very interesting and enlightening  first-person video clips relating to Science and Maths topics. Examples include  Seed Dispersal and the Physics of Mirrors. You can find these and more on STEMbite's  YouTube Channel

Perthaps this technique will establish itself as another 'important' video style alongside thiose developed by RSA and  CommonCraft.  I think this does extend the potential for the educational user generated video and may inspire lots of innovative approaches. What do others think?

Why projects are the best way to learn.

Why projects are the best way to learn. | Whole-school STEM & PBL | Scoop.it

I finished reading Daisy Christodoulou’s ‘Seven Myths About Education’ a few weeks back now. This is a book that can appear controversial and is possibly a little bit provocative for the sake of publicity. However, it was a good read and has made me think about my practice somewhat.

Ray Tolley's insight:

Yes, PBL is all about the ownership of the learning process and not a simple project foisted upon a whole class.

Teaching Kids To Learn: Stay Curious

Teaching Kids To Learn: Stay Curious | Whole-school STEM & PBL | Scoop.it

“I love learning, and when I get the opportunity to learn I’m stimulated and I’m happy…Curiosity is my prime mover, not an effect of something that happens to me.” Wouldn’t your heart leap if you heard a 12-year-old describe their love of learning in this way? Sure, it might take an exceptionally articulate 12-year-old to use a sophisticated term like “prime mover”, but the invigorating thrill of curiosity and simple unadulterated delight in learning are clear.

Ray Tolley's insight:

Not only true of 'a 12-year-old'  -  We should be encouraging this at all ages - even into adulthood.

Can we really measure happiness? How does educational attainment vary across ZIP codes? What does math have to do with charity? Which team has the better athletes, Liverpool or Manchester United? Originally, when I and the other teacher involved set it up, we envisaged the it as a bit of an educational show, talking about current trends in education, sharing tips for teachers and discussing educational news. So far, so good, but hardly the most exhilarating project one could imagine.

That changed suddenly.....

Looks promising but I hope that they can provide links to podcasts as the time-difference from Australia makes things a bit difficult!

How PBL Prepares Students for CCSS Test Performance Tasks: Part 2 - PBL is Already Aligned for Assessment | Whole-school STEM & PBL | Scoop.it

Editor's Note: This is the second part of a report adapted from the Buck Institute for Education's Google+ Hangout of April 9, 2014 with Justin Wells ofEnvision Learning Partners and BIE National Faculty member Andrew Miller. InPart 1, we discussed how the Common Core tests are being designed, and looked at a sample ELA performance task for assessing research skills.

Ray Tolley's insight:

For the UK situation do not ignore this because of 'CCSS' references.  There is a lot of valuable thinking in this report.  Many years ago my teacher of NT Greek said, "Look at the verbs, boyo, look at the verbs!"  This is so true of PBL.

What It Takes to Become an All Project-Based School

What It Takes to Become an All Project-Based School | Whole-school STEM & PBL | Scoop.it

In many schools, project-based learning happens in isolated cases: in certain teachers’ classrooms here and there, or in the contexts of specific subjects. But for students to benefit from project-based learning, ideally it’s part of a school’s infrastructure — a way to approach learning holistically.

Educational technology isn't leveling the playing field - Hechinger Report

Educational technology isn't leveling the playing field - Hechinger Report | Whole-school STEM & PBL | Scoop.it

The local name for the Philadelphia neighborhood of Kensington is “the Badlands,” and with good reason. Pockmarked with empty lots and burned-out row houses, the area has an unemployment rate of 29 percent and a poverty rate of 90 percent. Just a few miles to the northwest, the genteel neighborhood of Chestnut Hill seems to belong to a different universe. Here, educated professionals shop the boutiques along Germantown Avenue and return home to gracious stone and brick houses, the average price of which hovers above $400,000.

Ray Tolley's insight:

Not STEM nor PBL but I include this as an important document for all teachers using ICTs.  It has an important message for all teachers of underprivileged students, particularly at Primary School levels.

This year’s trendy new term in education is “grit.” Love it or hate it, it’s being talked about on blogs and other social media, and Edutopia just released an excellent new video about it. No doubt there are people presenting staff development workshops about grit in schools around the nation, and companies are quickly producing curriculum materials to sell. Here at BIE, we are seeing grit show up in our PBL 101 Workshops, when we ask educators to list the qualities of an “ideal graduate.” For sure, grit is happening in 2014!
