I learn as I experience. "Our learning occurs in a rich environment of diverse experiences – email, conversations, communities, workshops, tutorials, seminars, etc". As I prepare to deliver lessons, as a lecturer, I closely engage with the contents of lesson.  Why don't make students do the same.  Make them closely engage with lessons in a rich environment of diverse experiences – peer instruction, group presentations, dialogues, debates, etc

Catch Engineering Live: How Do We Get More Kids Into STEM?

Catch Engineering Live: How Do We Get More Kids Into STEM? | Whole-school STEM & PBL | Scoop.it
It’s easy to say we need more kids interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), the challenge comes in finding ways to accomplish it. Whether it’s the toys they play with as kids, or the classes they take as students, we are experiencing a surge in the STEM movement to (at least) encourage children to develop the basic skills involved in engineering and science, so they can decide for themselves if it’s more of a future than an interest.

How to get students to own their learning. | Whole-school STEM & PBL | Scoop.it

In previous years we have started school with a week of orientation. We did team building activities, had a huge, crazy scavenger hunt, and had students on a high ropes course. Although we felt those were successful approaches to the start of a new year we decided to do something different this year. So we started by continuing the Water Project that we ended with last year.

Bereft of examples and inspiration, many educators struggle to conceive of iPad integration beyond mere substitution for whatever came before. Educators need guidance on how to leverage iPads as hubs of innovation that nurture the learning skills, competencies, and habits of mind that help students develop skills for today's world.

Schools Should Take Place in the Real World | New Tech Network

Schools Should Take Place in the Real World | New Tech Network | Whole-school STEM & PBL | Scoop.it

Published on 10 Nov 2014

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.
Many kids hate school. There is little captivating about writing a paper that will be thrown in the garbage after a grade is written on it with a red pen. There is not much real-world application found by sitting in rows in complete silence, being released from class by a factory bell, and listening to someone talk for an hour about topics that have no relevance to your current and future life.

Ray Tolley's insight:

A very challenging talk, typical of TED, which will make many teachers think twice about what they are inflicting upon their students.

The Value of a Robust Core Curriculum, with Bill Nye | Big Think

The Value of a Robust Core Curriculum, with Bill Nye | Big Think | Whole-school STEM & PBL | Scoop.it

In his recent Big Think interview, Bill Nye proposed his version of an ideal core curriculum. Spoiler Alert: there's science involved.
As Bill explains, incorporating science and math into the elementary core curriculum is vitally important because future scientists develop their passion for those subjects during the 8-10 age range. It's much rarer for doctors or astronauts to be late converts. For this reason, Bill stresses the need to invest in a strong elementary core curriculum.

Ray Tolley's insight:

Good as far as he goes, but Engineering and Design Technology add the real flesh and practical reality to what could otherwise be only partially delivered.  It's the PBL that enhances the delivery of the real and personal learning experience.

Why projects are the best way to learn. | Whole-school STEM & PBL | Scoop.it

I finished reading Daisy Christodoulou’s ‘Seven Myths About Education’ a few weeks back now. This is a book that can appear controversial and is possibly a little bit provocative for the sake of publicity. However, it was a good read and has made me think about my practice somewhat.

Ray Tolley's insight:

Yes, PBL is all about the ownership of the learning process and not a simple project foisted upon a whole class.
